Just chatting with a friend about my youth taking Martial Arts in the city every T/Th evening for 4 years and me playing forced bus boy for the worlds rudest waiter.

Anyone else here had the pleasure of being talked down to by Mr Fong at Sam Wo’s??

Tough to be the young teen punk hanging with 20 somethings after class and Edsel making a point of entertaining them with me. :facepalm.

Still.. all in fun. Great memories. I think they slid me a saki here and there. :teeth

My instructor was a total bad ass.

Yes. Late seventies. That place was great.
He would make folks change tables to more efficiently pack the room. While they were eating. It was hilarious.

The new place isn't bad by any means. I only ate there once but I had what was arguably some of the best service from a chinese restaurant in a long, long time.

I ate at Sam Wo's just to be abused by Edsel. He was incredible. I loved watching him when new customers came up the tiny stairs to the top and looked around expectantly, to be met by Edsel yelling at them: "You sit over here, now! Hurry up."

I got to know him a bit, he loved to gamble. We bet once on the color of the dress the next woman would be wearing.

I honestly miss that place and time. Last time I was over, Sam Wo was open again under new management, but that was pre covid. And it moved.

I remember sitting upstairs near the dumbwaiter, and Edsel, pulling plates out and telling us to pass them over to the table next to us.
