In February 1983 my friend that owned the CB1100R was testing a race car at Laguna Seca, he raced Formula Atlantic. That day he shared the track with with the Yamaha team & Michael Andretti.

I really don't think Lawson and Knobby Clark liked me snooping around with a camera.

Kel Carruthers, on the other hand was very nice. He came up to me and asked what the pictures were for. I told him some story about a school project. He just said something about not showing them to competition and let me continue.

What the hell, I've been here a while and I've never seen this thread before.
The first photo I was thinking Eddie looks pissed then I scroll down one more and yeah he is pissed :laughing
Being a kid growing up in bum fuck nowhere Canada I had to wait for the latest Motorcyclist Magazine to get the 3 month old race report. You guys lived right there.

What's the story on this design? I had an Arai Freddie Spencer replica. That dude was always number one with me.

The KR500 stripped... guess Kawi wasn't as protective of their stuff as Honda, Suzuki, & Yamaha....

Im slowly working my way through.
I recognized this immediately as the KR. Yeah interesting that Kawasaki didn't keep it covered. Weren't they the only ones or at least the first ones to try this monocoque chassis design? I guess the competition didn't take it too serious.

I think a lot of the Honda racers wore that design, or a slight variation.

Mask had lots of success with 250s & 350s (Kork Ballington, Anton Mang), but not much the few times they tried 500s.

The big star that year was the NR500. I'm not sure, but I think it was the only time it was raced in the US. It really was cool, back when Honda was more innovative.

Oh, yeah #5 is former FIM 500cc World Champion Marco Lucinelli (spelling?), I think he was the 82' Champ?

Still working my way through the thread. That's a Neil McKenzie helmet. Lucchinelli had a M on the back, yeah you can't see the back but can see enough to know its not his.
Lucchinelli had #5 HB Honda back in 1983

that is scotsman niall mackenzie on the hb honda,think he was third in the race after his disc's warped.
was on pole for first race in japan
and won 3 british superbike titles
and is a very nice man.

I remember watching an interview with McKenzie back then and someone had labeled him the ugliest man in GP racing. He seemed hurt by it and thought Mamola should be the rightful owner of that title :laughing

I was at this event. That bike sounded totally awesome. The tach didn't even start until 10,000 rpm. 22,000 redline. Spencer really pissed off King Kenny by beating him in the heat race. I don't think Kenny ever lost a heat at Laguna...Spencer was hauling...the it broke in the main event.

Again, i apologize for the quality. This one especially, but I think was the only appearence in North America of the NR500 so I thought it was worth posting.

The factories used to test at Laguna & Sears back in 02 to 04. I used to go out and watch, it was real casual you could go almost anywhere without being hassled.

Sad indeed. Last I read about him he was accused of stealing money out of the hand of an old lady and stealing a purse,also a heroin addict.
