Oil change

Is it necessary to replace the sump pump washer every time I perform an oil change? Does it have to be an OEM replacemment?

Also, what is the best oil to put in an 01 GSXR 750 race bike?

what is a sump pump washer? and what does it have to do with an oil change? :confused

as for the quality of various oils, this is a big can of warms. there are many threads with regards to these. if you do a search, you will even find one that I put up a while back with results of an oil study done by one of the motorcycling magazines.

I personally think there are quite a few very good, very comparable oils out there. I use/have used the Mobil1 MX4T motorcycle oil for all of my motorcycles.

The oil pan is sealed with a drain plug that has an aluminum crush washer. This is relatively soft and gives the plug a decent seal. It's not really necessary to replace the washer every time you change the oil. The washer should be replaced if it gets deformed or if you notice any seepage. Be careful, because overtightening the plug can deform the washer and also strip the threads in the pan.

whoops I meant sump plug washer or drain plug washer! :teeth

I stuck in Motul fully synthetic, but at $15 a litre that's $45 just for the oil! Is this too puch to pay?

Are you talking about this article? $45 is a lot for each oil change, but whatever puts you at ease I guess. I use Mobil1 synthetic for cars in my bike.. I've never actually heard of anything bad happening, and at $24 for a whole crate, I'm happy with it. If you do some searches in Garage/General, you'll find a lot of discussions about choice of oils to use. Good luck.
