Years ago I got my personal plate for my Mazda RX7 from the DMV

In CA, plates go with the vehicle.

I remember seeing MC plates with WMWMNWM and MWMWNMW or something similar that were intended to be specifically difficult to identify. Surprised that made it through.

"Lieutenant Bob, I have an idea. What if we put in a request to run a DMV vehicle search for a japanese motorcycle plate, registered within 50 miles, that contains three Ws, or three Ns, or three Ms?"

I have a plate on my Gamma that reads: LONSTER.
On my Lucky Strike, I applied for the plate: LQNSTER. I was denied.
I appealed the decision and was denied again. The letter said that LQNSTER was too close to an existing plate. I went as far as getting a phone number for the lady that made these decisions, and spoke with her about why I couldn't have this plate. She confirmed that it was too close to 'another personalized plate'. I used the argument about standard consecutive plates being a single digit off, but she didn't budge.
I finally argued that, even though both plates were very close, they would BOTH BE ON MY MOTORCYCLES! In the event that a police officer needed to contact me about EITHER plate, BOTH would lead back to ME.

DENIED.

I ended up going with LONSTR1.

I just tried to order another personal plate and it's temp suspended....

Dang, I was just about to order another, I got one in back in Sept, it's been about 10 weeks still waiting for it to arrive.

Plates belong to the person, not the vehicle. I have had the same plates on several different vehicles for years.

Ditto... and an assorted collection hanging on my garage wall that were specific to a vehicle or became part of my past so to speak.

I bought a license plate frame that said flying low to the ground for a Moto and it set off a theme. I now have. 2WLAV8R... HWYAV8R.. and on one car 4WLAV8R. I do love flying low to the ground. :teeth

Plates belong to the person, not the vehicle. I have had the same plates on several different vehicles for years.

Personalized plates belong to the driver, but the standard issue plates belong to the vehicle. Last year we traded in a car that had standard issue, handicapped plates and we removed those plates thinking we could simply transfer them to the new car we bought. We took them in to the DMV and they tossed them and issued brand new handicapped plates, telling us that we can't re-use plates that are not personalized...

A couple of years ago I saw a white Lexus sedan with the plate ANASLEX.

It amazed me it ever got past the censors.

I got rejected "for being too close to another plate" or something.

As if they don't use consecutive numbered plates already.

i lived in a house with my buddy and a new roomie showed up to rent a room. him and my buddy had the same state issued license plate 1 number off in the same location at the end for their motorcycles. it was kind of a trip

^^ real easy to do, dealers sometimes have a stack of plates, and disperse them as needed.
My last GF had prious from SLO toyota, the only way I could tell her from others was the plate number. I can tell you this, so many prious with consecutive numbers in the county is staggering.
