Off-duty FBI dude shoots someone in the Haight-Ashbury late at night.

Why does an off duty FBI agent need to carry a firearm?

Off duty seems to be meaningless. Cops are allowed to moonlight as security guards while retaining their on-duty cop powers.

This story is a non-story at this point, because it doesn't provide any information about why it happened. Maybe somebody tried to rob him on the street. Who knows?

LEOs usually have their service weapons on their person even off duty. When my granddad was NYPD, they were required to have it with them at all times.

LEO in California don't need a CCW.
They carry because they can.
Supposing you're a LEO and you're out on a date and run across somebody whom you put behind bars years ago and they still carry a grudge.

Suppose they're armed, but you aren't.

How is that going to turn out?

Every LEO that I've known always carried when off duty. They'd feel naked without, and there is a good reason for them to do so, just the nature of their job.

Every law enforcement officer I've ever known is always armed. Used to ride with a couple of CHP's many years ago and they were always armed and we talked about it several times. I don't know that they were required to be armed at all times but both of them felt like they were always on duty or potentially on duty so they always had their badges and their guns.

It's not a job you get to punch out and go home from.

I carry a gun as protection off-duty in case I encounter someone that recognizes me and wants to harm my family or me because of my job. Not because I want to do police work in my free time......

3rd degree assault lol. Anybody else would get jail time. The point is, don’t hold your breath until you hear more details. Not slamming law enforcement here, but the feds had much less openness than every other agency.

You're joking right? There are gang bangers who discharge guns in public, get caught and never do a day of jail time. You think what that moron FBI guy did was a crime requiring time in the pen?
