Odometer less than what is on title

Hey All!

Question for you. I want to sell my motorcycle, however when I originally bought it, the owner and myself both misread what the actual odometer was, we were looking at the trip a instead. So now that I want to sell my bike, I don’t know if I need to do anything with DMV to have this corrected on the title.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks

It's impossible to have the trip odometer read higher than the actual odometer... Did you record a mileage way UNDER what the actual mileage is?

Regardless, how big of a difference are we talking here? couple hundred miles, couple thousand miles, 10's of thousands ?

A little confused here as the title says odometer less than title but then you say you wrote down the trip mileage previously.

How could the trip mileage ever be higher than the odometer? (Odometer less than title)

I can see that the odometer has less than the title if you wrote down higher mileage but for sure like I said it wouldn't have been the trip mileage.

Either way you are gonna just have to explain that to the person you sell the bike to. I'm not sure what will happen with the new title saying the bike has less mileage than the title you have now

DMV won't record the mileage on the title, rather that spot will be blank, and it will note on vehicle history reports that mileage is not accurate.

Threads merged.

OP, we generally like to stick to a topic living in one spot. Not a big deal--I squashed the two into this one.

Good luck!

the simplest answer will depend on the buyer, but the DMV just needs to see a number bigger than what was last written down in my experience. nobody official will check it, like ever. so if the buyer doesn't care, at 100 miles to the last number and there will be no problem.

if the bike is over 10 years old, you don't even have to write anything down because apparently they don't care anymore.

i'd do the +100 miles thing personally.

The most common reason for this is 49 state bikes being brought in and represented as if they had over 7,500 miles on them, but in reality had much less.

Whoever said find and understanding buyer is correct.

You can also do a statement of facts, but given the federal quotient of odometer disclosure, I'd go with the first route.

In response, the odometer said: 2432.5, and we both somehow glazed over that and thought it was 24,325.

The actual reading was 16,524.

@wichita Rather than get speculation from people who aren't 100% certain on how to resolve this issue, call this number 1-800-777-0133 and explain the situation to the friendly person on the other end, then follow their suggested response.:thumbup

I was in a similar situation a 2 years ago when transferring my out of state motorcycle title.

Originally when I first bought the bike, it had roughly 8,000 miles said so on the title. When I went to put the title in my name, the Hawaii DMV listed on the title as it having 80,xxx miles! I didn't notice it for 4 years until I had my bike in Cali and decided to register it here.

When I went to the Cali DMV I didn't ask any questions, I just put the real odometer reading when filling out the Cali dmv paperwork at the DMV, the bike now having 12,xxx miles. I checked the box saying that this is the actual odometer reading, because it was. There were no alterations to my odometer. No one batted an eye seeing as the bike went from being listed on the old title as 80,xxx mi to 12,xxx miles on the new title.

Maybe I got lucky but take from this what u will :)

My FZ6 which I purchased in Jan that had this issue. The previous owner when he had it DMV inspected in Michigan had the mileage on the title recorded as more than the actual odometer. The bike has 2 trip meters and there was a "2:" in front of the trip odo and the mileage on the title was 2+trip odo. When I called him out on it we figured out what happened. He actually went and pulled the title for his car that was done at the same time and they shanked that one too.
CA DMV didn't even bat an eye at it when I had I registered it and inspected with the Michigan title with incorrect mileage. Michigan titles also don't track the engine # so there's no way to know if it was the orig engine other than sellers word. He ended up writing a note to that effect and signing it. Didn't need it, didn't point out the issue to the DMV and I put the actual mileage from the odo on the registration paperwork.
