That Looks About Right
I enjoy it because there is nothing quite like 5th gear pinned in the sand or launching off a dune only to realize that you don't have the suspension or skills to make the landing. Pulling up to camp after a long day of watching idiots get their $50k trucks stuck, popping open an ice cold adult beverage and enjoying the sound of the ocean. I enjoy it because I get to go somewhere that is set aside for me to enjoy it.

Best of all, I enjoy it because it scares sissies.

Why do you enjoy riding a motorcycle? 60mpg is unimpressive for something that carries one person and has very little cargo space... so I'm guessing it's not the "I'm saving the world with one less car"

I go to Cal Poly, like Junkie, and live pretty close to the dunes.

I go because it's fun, a similar type of fun like why I go to track days. I've taken quads and my SUV out there and its a challenge to see what I can do with my overweight SUV. I get to spend time with friends and push my machine in a safer enviroment then anywhere else.

If the only positive reason you give for owning a motorcycle is the gas mileage then you may not understand my point of view.

This morning I drove on the beach to take my friend out there, who's on crutches from a pretty bad accident, where he would be able to make it to the waters edge, where our dogs like to play.

Also, the OHV areas are the only financially sustainable state parks due to the entrance fees, and officials have actually taken money from the OHV fund to keep other non-OHV parks open.

Sorry people she has a legitimate question here. What do we find fun about Pismo? So I'll start.

1) I get to hang out with friends and family that I don't get to see that often due to time, distances and work schedules. It's like having a big ol family reunion every time we go.
2) It's like having your own personal car show with the various machines that are cruzin around. It is amazing to see what people show up with whether store bought or backyard budget mechanic.
3)There is nothing like hanging out at a campfire with the ones you love and care about after a fun day of riding thru the dunes (whether fast or slow) sharing stories of past and present.
4) Pitting yourself man (and woman) and machine pushing yourself to your limits. Adrenaline is the best drug in the whole world.
5) Lastly for me, I get to spent quality time with my son and pass on family traditions to him. And yes he has learned a lot about respecting the environment. Rule Number 1 Haul it in Haul it out.

I could go on and on but I am not going to because, I’m sure others have there own reasons why they go to Pismo.

As for people getting stuck it is just part of sport/hobby and there is like everything else, there is a learning curve. Getting stuck sucks!

My suggestion, oaklandace, is for you is to go down there, rent a quad and try it for yourself. I would be surprised if you didn't come back with a grin on your face.

the last time I went to Pismo...

Everyone had ATC's (three wheelers)... pitching them sideways around the banked turns sure was fun...

FUN!!!

Nope - I never said that - but nobody here is making a case for what's fun about it. Curious, that. Instead of trying to describe what they like about it -

Riding dirtbikes is fun, riding quads is fun, Smashing your everyday vehicle is fun, Doing it in the sand is fucking bad ass. They whole experience is fun.:thumbup

SKRRRRRRRRRRRT!!!!!!
Sorry, I don't see what is fun about what's happening out on the dunes - it can happen in so many places, why there? There are lots of "parks" for that stuff - quads & jetskis are two noisy creatures that just baffle me. I can see the strategic use for the vehicles in forest service (and Coast Guard use, respectively) but ... fun?

This, however - was REALLY funny -

I just don't understand why you would by something this heavy and not realize that the combined weight of vehicle + trailer + load would bury you deeper and deeper in the sand.

It took them about 1 hour before they realized they could gain ground by unloading the quads and driving them to their site, and unhooking the trailer.

its all about tire pressure and you dont get stuck, ive taken my familys 45 foot marathon coach out there without any problems.....and if you dont like that part of the beach next time you drive down go to the right and not the left cuz no one likes a debbie downer:twofinger

3)Aprox. how many acers was Pismo's riding area?(before fence)
4)What is the aprox. current riding acers?
5)What were the first dune buggies with front engines called?

I remember when there was no fence line. But I'm to old to remember any of the other stuff.

My first trip to Pismo in I think 1981, riding a clapped out rental. The seat and rear fenders would fall off everytime I jumped it. Funny how that didn't stop me form jumping it. You gotta love the knee out style, sleeveless shirt and long hair blowing in the wind:thumbup

2) Devils slide is all the way at the end of the beach heading south. On a clear day you can still see it if you look with some bicoculars.
3) There was aprox 15,000 ac. to ride on
4) There is about 1,500 ac. to ride on now.
5) They were called Water Pumpers.

I think it should be closed to motorized vehicles - have you been there? It's full of yahoos with confederate & pirate flags driving humvees towing trailers with multi quads (and getting stuck up to their axles - ha ha ha ha ha!) - but it's a gorgeous beach and impossible to enjoy if you're not "one of them." Just so noisy and full of fumes and exhaust...

What are you...some kinda troll?
Why would you come to a motorcycle forum and spew your garbage about denying the rest of us riders a chance to enjoy something as awesome as Pismo?
Maybe you should stick to "Burning Man" where other like minded types hang out.
If you dont understand the whole thing just move on.....
Nothing to see here.......

Great ride report http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=314239 It sounds like an awesome ride. Do you realize you are one of them to the people that want to shut down Pismo and all OHV areas. Those same people would dearly love to keep you and your dual sport out of all those areas you rode. The anti OHV groups see no difference between you and a Rebel flag waving hillbilly quad rider.

I hope this puts it in perspective for Oaklandace. There is lots of Dunes to enjoy without OHVs, you just can't drive to them.

So, just because you don't personally enjoy it, nobody should be able to? I'm sure there are plenty of people who think trails should be closed to all motorized forms of transportation. Does that mean you shouldn't be allowed to ride a dirt bike?

Again, there are plenty of places where you can enjoy the beach in peace and quiet (many of them very close to Oceano Dunes). Why do you have to go there?

BTW, Oceano Dunes is one of those "parks" set aside for motorized recreation with its maintenance funded by gas tax and green/red sticker fees like all the other off-road parks.

Nope - I never said that - but nobody here is making a case for what's fun about it. Curious, that. Instead of trying to describe what they like about it - everyone wants to rip me apart.

actually yes you did say that, see below in case you forgot

climbing up to my soap box......

I live on a very busy street. Loud ass Harleys, diesel trucks (not semis, but pickups who want to be semis) and Japanese race cars routinely travel by my house. Do I enjoy this? Not really but I don't want to ban them from my street just because it annoys me and I don't share their enthusiasm for their particular motorsport. This would lead to a slippery slope mentality and pretty soon nothing would be allowed except for bicycles.

Do you realize that virtually every mile of CA coastline is off limits to motor vehicles except for the postage stamp size acreage of Pismo?

What do you ride and where? Do you think everyone on earth approves of your recreation or mode of transportation?

Sorry for the rant and hopefully this is taken as constructive criticism.

We're losing ALL of our ohv opportunities, throughout the nation, slowly but surely, Because of people like Jenn. Everything is being closed, I can cite hundreds of examples. Nothing new is being opened. These people are control freaks, don't compromise, want everyone to live according to their rules, hate people who are different and seem to be basically unhappy individuals. They seem to be worry wort's, overly obsessed with being politically correct, probably obsessive compulsive, leaning towards socialism.

It's ironic they have their Burning-Man celebration where they seem to go wild, take lot's of drugs, have anonymous unprotected sex and act all freaky. So my last point to make is that they are also hypocrites. Jenn is a good example as she dirt bikes. Do as I say, not as I do...

I thought liberals believed in "live and let live"? :rolleyes
