gone for now
I think it should be closed to motorized vehicles - have you been there? It's full of yahoos with confederate & pirate flags driving humvees towing trailers with multi quads (and getting stuck up to their axles - ha ha ha ha ha!) - but it's a gorgeous beach and impossible to enjoy if you're not "one of them." Just so noisy and full of fumes and exhaust...
There are lots of other gorgeous beaches that you can go enjoy without vehicles, Pismo is the only place you can go play on the beach with vehicles.

I had my tard out there a couple times, it was... interesting.

OMG. People enjoying freedom of speech! Stifle it immediately! What, and they want to actually use a park their funds pay for? The horror!

Divided we fall...

Sierra Club :thumbdown

California has a ton of pristine coastline that anybody can enjoy without motor vehicles running around on it. Let us keep this one tiny piece to ride on.

Is the lack of testosterone also what makes you want to take fun away from others?

If people want to look like tools with a confederate flag hanging from their 1989 "hotrod" topless blazer, let 'em. In fact, make fun of them. Invite them to Oaktownbootyville to display it. But let them enjoy the freedoms of America. They likely realize that it represents racist feelings- It's their loss for being ignorant and you are not going to save them.

I fail to see how having your own burning man in a state park is any less damaging than my super dangerous thrill craft dirt bike.

I guess the difference is instead of asking for you to be banned from the dunes, I would offer you a beer while laughing at your out of control blaze and ask if you wanted to ride my bike.

SKRRRRRRRRRRRT!!!!!!
See - that's the whole thing - who says you need to drive on the dunes? Walking is pretty nice, so are telemark skis (at least on Eureka dunes - sorry, no quads allowed there!).

I guess I just lack the amount of testosterone needed to think that just zooming around, throwing up sand and burning gas is "fun" ...

well maybe you should go there so no one has to hear you complain about pismo tree hugger.

Sorry, I don't see what is fun about what's happening out on the dunes - it can happen in so many places, why there? There are lots of "parks" for that stuff - quads & jetskis are two noisy creatures that just baffle me. I can see the strategic use for the vehicles in forest service (and Coast Guard use, respectively) but ... fun?

So, just because you don't personally enjoy it, nobody should be able to? I'm sure there are plenty of people who think trails should be closed to all motorized forms of transportation. Does that mean you shouldn't be allowed to ride a dirt bike?

Again, there are plenty of places where you can enjoy the beach in peace and quiet (many of them very close to Oceano Dunes). Why do you have to go there?

BTW, Oceano Dunes is one of those "parks" set aside for motorized recreation with its maintenance funded by gas tax and green/red sticker fees like all the other off-road parks.

Nope - I never said that - but nobody here is making a case for what's fun about it. Curious, that. Instead of trying to describe what they like about it - everyone wants to rip me apart.

I'm not trying to rip you apart at all. I'm just trying to have a friendly discussion. Sorry if you didn't take it that way.

I enjoy cruising around on the sand dunes (as I've been doing for over 20 years), but it doesn't bother me at all that you don't. Chances are, you enjoy various activities in which I have no interest. My point is that it doesn't have to be something I enjoy for me to recognize that others have a right to enjoy it.

Vehicular recreation does not damage the dunes in any significant way, especially with policies already in place to manage wildlife and native plants.

if you know what you're doing you can get around no problem in a car. I've been in 2WD pickups with no problem, and a friend of mine went damn near everywhere out there in a Geo Metro.

On the other hand, if you don't know what you're doing it's another question... you can get anything stuck if you suck enough.

Sorry people she has a legitimate question here. What do we find fun about Pismo? So I'll start.

1) I get to hang out with friends and family that I don't get to see that often due to time, distances and work schedules. It's like having a big ol family reunion every time we go.
2) It's like having your own personal car show with the various machines that are cruzin around. It is amazing to see what people show up with whether store bought or backyard budget mechanic.
3)There is nothing like hanging out at a campfire with the ones you love and care about after a fun day of riding thru the dunes (whether fast or slow) sharing stories of past and present.
4) Pitting yourself man (and woman) and machine pushing yourself to your limits. Adrenaline is the best drug in the whole world.
5) Lastly for me, I get to spent quality time with my son and pass on family traditions to him. And yes he has learned a lot about respecting the environment. Rule Number 1 Haul it in Haul it out.

I could go on and on but I am not going to because, I’m sure others have there own reasons why they go to Pismo.

As for people getting stuck it is just part of sport/hobby and there is like everything else, there is a learning curve. Getting stuck sucks!

My suggestion, oaklandace, is for you is to go down there, rent a quad and try it for yourself. I would be surprised if you didn't come back with a grin on your face.
