non op reg'ed bike

Darkness!

Where's the kick starter?
Dear BARF LEO's can you weigh in on the rules (i.e. law) about doing test rides on a non op'ed bike? Reg is out of date and if one were to get stopped (not for a traffic stop, I understand rider would be liable for that) could the rider get a ticket for test riding a bike out of reg period even if it is comes up as a non op?

To clarify, if the rider gets stopped simply for the tags being out of reg. Not for any other reason. If the rider explained that he/she is simply test riding the bike (and I don't mean a canyon carving, flog the bike til she squeals test ride) just around the neighborhood to test the engine/brakes/electricals, etc.

I also understand that it may depend on that particular officer on that particular day. What does the law say?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it is illegal no matter what?

Thanks all.

Yeah, it's going to be illegal. Normally, that's going to be an owner's responsibility sort of thing. Whether or not the test rider would get a ticket would be up to the chances of getting stopped + the discretion of the officer.

Additionally, a vehicle with registration out of date at least 6mo may be towed, and if you get caught operating a non-op vehicle DMV can decide the whole non-op is invalid and make you pay all the fees.
