Newer 5 Gallon Gas Cans - Junk!

I only had one 5 gallon gas can (plastic) in the garage for various refueling needs (garden tools, FJR, etc.). I've had this one for several years. I bought three new ones to get ready for fire season and to fuel our new generator.

The new ones come with a plastic tube installed that is formed as a screen to catch debris. The blasted things restrict flow when filling and results in gas getting dumped everywhere when trying to fill creating a mess and releasing huge amount of fumes that the new cans are supposed to prevent.

But here is the kicker. If the screens do catch debris (which isn't likely since gas pump lines are very well filtered) it just causes it to be dumped right into whatever you are trying to fuel up.

This has to be the brainchild of some idiot at CARB sitting behind a desk with nothing else to do. Luckily the stupid screens can be pulled out.

The new nozzles are the subject of another rant...

Those aren't bad, I have a one gallon version I use for the weed whacker. The nozzle is pretty easy to use. The five gallon ones in your ad are more than twice the cost of my newer ones.

I bought one of the newer ones from Costco. It has a screen which I pulled out but the nozzle is a freakin' nightmare. It has a very complicated actuation latch that requires so much force to work that it's almost impossible to keep the nozzle in the tank when trying to fill. I just rotate the better nozzles around to make them work.

They are terrible. Just go on eBay and get a regular one.

I don't even understand what the point of the filter is. There is likely a fuel filter in whatever you are pouring the gasoline in, and there is another one on the pump where you got it.

Just go to a moto shop and buy a jug & lid/spout separate, Cycle Gear when they go on sale. Or if you're out of state, shop while you're there.

Didn't think of that but should have. We have a very good moto shop at the north end of town (Motosports of Ukiah). I'm pretty much set now with four cans. I can pull the screens and rotate nozzles (I have a couple of decent ones).

The "new" crapy ones are all over the place- in and out of CA. The pro-trick is buying a "storage" container for an unkown benign fluid that just happens to be a lot like gas. How about that?

Then you buy a "spout kit" for a "water storage" jug- Craig's or eBay- that just happens to fit perfectly. The really good ones you drill the plastic jug a bit, the kit has a template as I recall- takes 10 seconds to do. That the two are made for each other is not accidental. Just a way around the practice of spilling vastly more fuel than ever before, in the pursuit of reduced pollution.

Unfortunately due to Californiasoputsized influence on the market we are all forced to make do with CA compliant gas cans no matter where we live so that manufacturers don't have to split their factory lines up for CA compliant and non-CA gas cans so we all lose thanks to CARB.....

This ^^^ They're about $6 on eBay and problem solved. I think I bought a 3-pack and "fixed" all of my gas cans. No more hassle. No more spilling gas.

This
I haven't owned a proper "fuel can" in over a decade.
It also prompts me to use leftover dirtbike fuel in the lawn mower and pressure washer before it gets stale.
The mower loves higher octane moto fuel. I'm pretty sure it would do the 1/4 mile in the low 11's.

You need to reread* what I wrote, you'll be happy you did.

I have one of these and like it, but all of the newer ones are sealed and day/night temp swings cause them to flex pretty extremely. I had one leak at the seam, presumably from the daily pressure/vacuum cycles, which of course negates the "safety" of a sealed container. Now I just leave all the lids loose.

I have ≈20 of them, 4+ years in super hot to super cold and none of the seams burst
