New to BARF - I have a request!

Hello!
I have to admit, though I do own a motorcycle, I very rarely ride it. I came here to ask something of the community, specifically those riding to, from, or near Alice's Restaurant, HWY-84, or Woodside.
I work at Wunderlich Park (4040 Woodside Rd) about a quarter mile east of the Portola/HWY-84 intersection, on that long straightaway. My job is to teach children to ride horses. The few people I've talked to so far have told me they didn't know about it, so maybe you won't either, but there is a riding arena about 20ft from the road on that straightaway. Yes, really. Look up the hill next time and wave at me, I'm in there most days all day.
Because it's a long straightaway and it looks safe, most motorists speed there. That's fine, I do too (speed limit is 35, almost everyone goes 45). What is NOT fine is the motorists who speed by as loudly as possible. Once again, I teach CHILDREN to ride HORSES. Horses are prey animals, and even though ours are the absolute best I've ever met, loud noises still scare them. So when people speed by revving their engines or forcing backfires, my horses spook. Many children have fallen off because of it. No one has been seriously hurt so far, but I have sent several clients away in ambulances. Horse accidents are not to be taken lightly - hitting the ground at the wrong angle can kill you.
I've been doing what I can to make our presence known. I won't believe that the people going by making noise do so with intent to get my students killed, which is why I'm writing this post.

I don't know you, you don't know me, that doesn't need to change. But if you, or someone you know, or a friend of someone you know, ever drives through Woodside to or from Alice's, please let them know that they are putting children in mortal danger by showing off their engines on that straightaway. Please.

Thank you! And let me know if there is anywhere else (on this forum or elsewhere) I could post this message to reach more people. I am willing to stand in the Alice's parking lot with a megaphone if I have to.

Much love,
vix

P.S. There's one motorist who goes by every Sunday toward Alice's and comes back a few hours later whose engine backfires so much it sounds like they're firing a gun. The rest of this post was not personal, but this is. If any of you know this person, refer them to me. I need to speak with them.

Welcome to the forum Vix.

It's unfortunate that the horse arena was built so close to the road.
I can see how any number/type of vehicle noises could be disruptive.

Would it be possible to move the children training to the nearby Mountain Home stables which are further from the road?
As seen here...

Also... have any signs been put up on Woodside Rd indicating that there is a riding arena there with noise spooked horses and request as silent a pass through as possible?

Tough situation. Good Luck.

oh yeah... what motorcycle do you have?

Thank you vix for trying to contact the subject critical audience directly. This is only a piece of that audience, but we can probably help.

BARFers for ponies?
We need a cool sign.

I'd be willing to bet there are laws about some of what you describe, and since that is the case I would think that you not only need warning road signs but some sound abatement enforcement.

They should also be able to communicate the liability problem to the person you want to speak to in a way that you likely cannot.

Mountain Home is a private stable, run by different people. My company has a contract with the county to use the Folger Stable arena, so we really can't move.
As for signage, I think there are a few HORSE-XING signs scattered about, but not nearly enough. It's a difficult section of road operated by a weird combination of Comcast, The Town of Woodside, and the State of California, so new signs are a... Process. I'll look into it anyway, since I've been wanting that for a while.

I have a Yamaha! I don't know the year or model, since I really hardly ever ride it - I'm much busier with its non-steel cousins. If I find time in the next year or so I'll retake the training course and get my license, and have a much better answer next time someone asks me that question!

Just put the sign up and see who asks you to take it down, at least that gets you to the right agency right off the bat without having to hunt it down on your own. ;)

Above all I like to play.
Thanks for talking about the issue here. Most never would have known.

I like the idea of adding signs that simply say, "Children" below the "Horse XING" sign. I'd spray paint something that matches and just bolt it on one day.

posted in general for more exposure. i will try to put it on SBR too.

thinking... who are those other responsible folks? SBF? 5150? I dunno.

Seriously, BARF and SBR are the only really moto communities that use the 'net and actually ride. Are ther others? Do chime in if you have info.

Sadly, signs won't do a thing. They certainly don't on 84 or Pescadero Creek Rd. Your best bet is enforcement. Woodside Police used to hump that stretch daily. I don't see why they couldn't start up again. Let them know about the noise problem, and make sure they know it's been getting worse.

Ask the County for Permission to Post Signs advising motorists and others to hold down the noise.

Spreading the word is nice, but you're likely to alert only a few people. If you want to pacify the volume, you need to put up big Orange Signs while you're teaching with a short, clear message.

Welcome to BARF Vix. Than you for posting instead of going straight to authorities. I'm another on board for signage. Sadly, if it keeps up, eventually there will be speed bumps and that'll remove all the fun :cry
