new router recommendation?

My D-Link DIR-890L is EOL, and the lats firmware upgrade is dated 2017. Although it works fine, I am going to replace it.

Thoughts on the Netgear Nighthawk AX-6200 unit? Costco sells them, and I'm thinking of running out to pick one up.

A separate but related issue: I live in an upstairs condo, and want to increase the wifi signal in my detached garage, which is line of sight from my front door but not from the router. I currently have an old Apple Airport used as a range extender indoors that is line of sight to the garage.

If you game on console I remember a couple buddies had some weird issue with the nighthawk. I'm not sure what the problem was, but I know it went away after replacing the router. Maybe something to look in to - could have been fixed by now

Well I like the Bosch Colt for hinge and mortise work because it's so light but for heavier stuff use a Freud in a table mount that rips just about anything.

Oh wait.....

hmm.. don't know this one but it should fly off the shelves. If you're lucky you could catch one, hopefully it's not too heavy

I still think keeping the modem and wifi router separately is better.

Netgear support is so-so, instructions are confusing, updates are sporadic and slow to arrive (security fixes take a while to be implemented).

Netgear is fine if you know, if you know you don't have to ask.

If a netgear device has a problem, they are a pain. I have had items RMAed, but it takes a bit of effort.

Rating company support for consumer products is a whole different game from rating the devices/products.

Business/Enterprise devices/products and all support features are tied directly together. If a great product has anything bad in support, then that product is down graded, even though the product is basically the best or perfect.

Don't get Netgear. If you follow vulnerabilities or exploits with routers they always make the list constantly and they suck at releasing fixes or at least they did a few years ago when I stopped buying their stuff.

Currently, I have an ASUS ROG AC5300 which I like. it has some management features that I use to limit kids' time on their PC. It also has a separate guest network so everyone goes on there and I can turn it off at whim or reset and not affect the core users. It also allows you to put a VPN at the router and all traffic goes through there. I think it also has tomato or WRT available to update it to unlocked. They also do firmware updates quite often.

I installed a Gryphon router yesterday because the ATT supplied combo gateway doesn't radiate good enough Wifi. The problem is, Ms BA has basically come out of retirement to tutor three Berkeley schoolkids as well as two of her own grandkids back in New York and needs good signal. Office is too small to use hardwire from gateway on her laptop to do all her teaching shit, which she does with two devices (laptop and phone on mount). Our house is only 1500sf so you'd think the Gateway would be good enough, too many obstacles I guess. The Gryphon is expandable for mesh booster thingamajigs though I doubt I'd ever need it. I dont need the parental controls, none of that shit that it comes with.

But to be honest, I am too old and an okay boomer. I have no idea whether I did it right, because it's so f@#cking confusing.

I followed the supplied "app" directions, as opposed to the ATT direction. The app said to use same SSID and password, whereas the ATT directions had all this stuff about disabling the gateway, using "bridge" mode blab-blabla. When I finally made it to the page where I was supposed to do all this shit, I couldn't figure it out which thing to disable and didn't even see anything about a bridge.

Everything works, but I have no idea whether my devices are reading the old gateway or the new modem but it seems via speedtest that its better. But the Gryphon does function as a new nightlight for our home office.

The devices in our home are beyond my understanding and control. It's such a sinking feeling. I have a Cat 5 cable to the gateway that the rats chewed, yet it still works and gives us about 300 whatever per whater for upload and download.. I already ran new cable to replace it but don't know how to terminate either end, especially since they installed some kind of fibre connection to my house. The asshole Uverse guy who upgraded to fibre cut the cable to my wall jack (wired by previous Uverse guy), then reterminated the wire and jammed it between my wall plate so it goes directly in Gateway. This made the coaxial jack (it's a dual jack) sit permanetly sideways. I can't figure out why he disabled the jack, whether it's necessary or what. If I knew this answer, I'd follow a Youtube video and buy the tools at Home Despot to redo it. I LIKE wall jacks. I LIKE to be able to unplug and move shit. I would rather have a set of jacks in my basement and hardwire everything tbh. I have a full open basement so it's easy to run cable up.

I think I need to go to night school to learn how to be an Internet installer so I can have freedom from ignorance or from sitting home all day from work to make sure Uverse guys don't pull shit on Ms BA when they honor their four hour window.

Gryphon seems like a nice company with a niceguy founder with a touching message. But all is illusion so who knows.

But it's a great nightlight and new source of brain-cancer causing death ray waves in our casa.

I think I am more like the average user than techy people, which is frightening.

Can you rephrase that in English?

Tomato and DD-WRT are aftermarket firmwares for your router that exposes a lot more options for advanced network setups, security, etc.

I used to do it when I wanted to feel like a network engineer. I probably only made things worse.

Then use Pi-hole to really fuck with your head.

"Honey, why won't <insert favorite gossip website> won't load properly?"
"Hold on. Let me log into Pi-Hole and white list it."
"White list it?"
"Ugh...never mind. Just try again in 30 seconds."
"Whatever. My peel is almost ready to come off of my face now so I'll check it out when I get back."

Well, I had that experience of when I just started the app-directed set up, it Firmware updated itself before anything else could happen.:laughing

Like I said, okay Boomer with no clue.

Aside from wondering if strangers who park outside my house are hacking me, I don't care about any advanced features. We don't game, we don't have teenagers. Nothin. Just three teevees, an ipad and a laptop. I don't want to have my refrigerator on WiFi even though its an option. No Nest cameras. No Wifi operated dog polishers, because we don't have a dog. In fact, I still have a dumbphone and had to use my iPad to use the stupid set up App which only read vertically for the screen.

Oh, and the Canon megatank printer, which insisted on Wifi. It was the only device that objected to the changeover. I had to unplug the router, then restart printer and it was okay. I have no idea which router it's reading.

I think there is still trouble to come and I don't look forward to that day. Probably when we fire up the teevee that has Roku. It's gonna be all confused and stuff.

Im happy with my ASUS RT-AC86U. My range went way up over a 4yr-old D-Link. The RT-AX86U is somewhat new with Wifi6 and more ram. Ive seen some good reviews.

Thanks all, this is very informative and entertaining. I'm going to BestBuy after work to pick up the Ubiquiti Amplifi kit, based on recommendations her, from my company's I.T. guru consultant, and my son.

If anyone is interested in my D-Link let me know. Hobo dollars not applicable, thank you! :rofl:teeth

Nice. I have the AmpliFi Instant. Covers my 2000 sq ft 2-story home nicely. Easy to set up. I have 300Mbs Xfinity service and I get anywhere from over 400Mbs (because why not) to about 220Mbs on wifi (iPhone X, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro tests) depending on where I am in the house. Worth the money.

The AmpliFi Dual-Band Mesh they sell at Best Buy might be a bit of an overkill for most people's needs. In your case, it's probably necessary.

Cool deal Ubiquiti is good kit.

I went with the Asus router myself because 90% of my house is hard wired. I did just pick up a AC1750 AP so that I can extend the signal to my pond so I can work from the island out there next spring when the weather is nice and the mosquitos haven't gotten bad yet.
