Steee-riiike!
My son is heavy into mt. biking and is outgrowing his current one (Giant hard tail, ~$400). His birthday is next month and I am looking to upgrade his ride, but need to keep the budget at 1500 or below. Do you have any suggestions?

TIA

i just bought this and i love it https://mikesbikes.com/collections/...ts/19-fuse-exp-29-6fat?variant=19356858875971

i got it on sale for 1750 plus a 250$ rebate from specialized. i know its slightly above your budget but there are other bikes a tier below it that are just as good. im a bigger guy so i need the fat tires. ill ask a fellow barfer if they still work at mikes. they also do a 30 day price match i believe so if it goes on sale cheaper there or with anyone else they will give you the difference

Performance Bike's prices used to beat the competition by a significant amount. Don't know if that's still the case. They will sell some crap bikes too though.

Maybe look at What Nukeprrof/yt/propane/etc. have to offer?

They're direct to consumer and higher end but aluminum hardtails from them tend to be really well priced. Nukeproof is quality. I've heard mixed things about YT and Propane is german.

If he's good with used maybe do that too? I just bought a Yeti SB5 for 2100 and its practically brand new.

If you want to save money with good components, go with generic brand names form Bikesdirect.com. It will come in a box, so probably want to build it and have a bike shop safety check and adjust everything.

Brakes are usually a pain to bleed for the average bike rider if you need to change brake housing length - you probably will unless you like floppy oversize brake lines.

Whatever that means
I've got a Corporate account for Diamond Back. If you see one you like I can let you know how much I can get it for

I bet he knows exactly what he wants and the cheapest way to get it, I know I always did back when I was a kid really into mountain bikes.

Maybe just give him some money and let him figure it out. He has the time and motivation to do the wheeling and dealing on discounted stuff or to scrounge around for used gear.

thanks all! Great info.

you guys are happy with all different kinds of bikes. I think it would mean more to him if he picked one out for himself. I'll pass on the info to him.

He goes on rides with a guy who co-owns a local bike shop. I bet my boy would want to buy from him. It's a reputable store that's been around for a while.

+1 for Craigslist, especially in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz has Santa Cruz Bikes, Ibis, Vista Outdoor and these companies are either getting bikes free or at near hole sale. Some employees buy a bike, use it for year and dump it on the Used market for a profit.

I know more about really shitty bikes than I do about super high end ones, but when I was looking for a nice affordable bike I ended up picking a 29" Trek Marlin 6. It had some nice features and was only like $500-600. I'm sure there's bikes much better than it, but it could be something to look at and use the extra $1k for upgrades or something else entirely lol. The only downside to the bike I recall was it's a little heavy.

I was just reading that the recently imposed tariffs are expected to drive a lot of bike and component prices up fairly soon. Might be worth making the purchase soon, if any of what he wants is Chinese made.
