New injury detection suit - protection gear people should take note of this

I stumbled upon this while looking at some ski stuff on the "internets". This suit is deigned to help paraplegic athletes because they can't feel injuries. I'm tossing this into the motorcycle forum because there might be some cross-over applications, perhaps a helmet lining. Could indicate the distinction between a bump to the helmet verses a powerful hit in sand where no visible damage might have occurred to the helmet.

Link below is to their website and features a cool 3 minute video:

I think this is a great idea. Imagine a patient who is awake but non-responsive, this would allow for the first responder to help assess other areas for trauma.

i would love a better way to know how hard i actually hit my head, instead of just guessing based on how much the world spun and how loose the helmet has become.

They should make one a bike cover to see how hard a bike may or may not have been kicked

Seems like there's a fair chance of false-positives if someone rolls or slides. The pressure sensitive films used in the design appear to assume a single impact injury vs. one that covers more surface area over time. If you're a disabled athlete I can see applicable use, but for motos if you get tossed, impact, and roll for instance you could end up looking like a harp seal in Nova Scotia more than a "hey I'm injured right there" kind of thing.

NKM - technically, the baby seals are hit just on the center of the skull, killing them instantly, so they're not beaten to a bloody pulp. Doing that would damage the skin, lessening the value.

Just FYI. :teeth

Good comments everyone! My thinking was really just about the helmet. The one other nasty injury we humans can suffer from high energy imapacts is an aortict tear. The person looks and acts normal, but after a few minutes goes unconscious and then stops breathing etc. Very bad when this happens when your're trying to help someone and then the court/legal stuff/depositions afterward.

But moving on from that. It might be helpful in some specific injury detection.

If the impact dissects your aorta, you have minutes until you exsanguinate, not until symptoms show.

In other words, dead man walking. Briefly. Not sure how you'd get into the legal aspects with the help of a suit.
