The first brand new motorcycle I bought was a 2014 ducati monster 696. It was an Xmas present for my wife who was riding a cbr250. It was a surprise for her that I had at my uncle's house for 2 weeks till Xmas(of course I broke it in for her during the 2 weeks) Anyway after I made the deal i had to wait about 2 hours for them to prep the bike. I told the sales guy I was happy it was 2 hour wait because I was on cloud 9 and it would not have been safe for me to ride the bike home earlier

Mostly as a kid.

10, 13, & 15-1/2 are most notable.
Yamaha mini enduro, CZ 250 and a Yamaha RD350.

Although at 25 getting my Ninja 600 was pretty cool because I knew road racing was just months away.

Every time I’m getting a new bike. Looking forward to that feeling sometime in Feb/March next year.

Sounds to me like a great theme for a new TV series ... would include lots of new car buying scenes. My uncle "Doc" bought Lincolns. Lots of them ... which was torture for him as he hated Henry Ford (for reasons we all know)

... but when the rich started going Mercedes and BMW ... the Doc never bought one.

My only serious crash on a motorcycle happened while riding a brand new bike. It was nearly ALL my fault ... overriding a bike I had not learned ... and not knowing how evil it's handling would be.

I also failed to double check the work of the guys who prepped this new bike.
After the crash my friend was waiting for tow truck, for laughs checked tire pressures: REAR had 50 PSI in it. Never did like the guys at that dealership.
But its on me ... I never checked the pressures ...:mad

The evil bike? '97 Honda SuperHawk 996.

I probably only felt that for my first new bike when I was 18. before that they were all used. After that I was more likely to feel guilty for buying a new bike over a cheaper low milage used bike.

The first one, a bit, but after dealing with the dealership, a decided bad taste was left in my mouth that seems to have never left. So after that all I wanted out the experience is not having to deal with the fuckwads that I have to go through to get a new bike. Even the 2fiddy I won, I was like meh. Same with cars....the dealership experience makes me want to vomit on their showroom floor and on the high end cars that are in there.

I've had the new bike high on all the new bikes I have ever bought. There is something about riding out on a bike that only you have ridden.:ride

The new bike high is what you are paying for with the depreciation of a new vehicle purchase.

That's what the penny pincers who only ever buy used vehicles will never understand.
You guys all know the people I'm talking about, you have seen them on this forum and others. Whenever the topic comes up, they will tell you how stupid it is to buy a new vehicle and lose thousands as soon as you drive it off the lot. They brag about how much money they save by only buying excellent condition, low mileage used vehicles and letting some other sucker take the hit in depreciation.
These people don't understand that depreciation isn't just pissing money into the breeze; you are getting something for it. And what you are getting is the experience of owning a brand new vehicle. The new bike high is part of that experience.

I have old bike high!
Just went for a Thanksgiving ride on my old bike - and I am literally high from the feeling of how well she rides.
I'll be very matter of fact about many things, but bikes makes me irrational, emotional and riding them gets me on an emotional high.

Exactly this. For an OCD, control freak like me, the satisfaction I get from getting something brand spanking new is worth the depreciation. There’s not a whole lot of mystery how it was treated before me. There’s no damage that got covered up. And it smells new.

This has been a very new vehicle heavy year for me with a new bike and three new cars. The one I’m most “high” over is the RDX I bought for my mother. A vehicle I’ll probably rarely ever drive. But it made me the happiest because I literally picked it off the truck as it came in to the dealership. 1 mile on it. I did the PDI myself and did paperwork on it a day after it came into the dealership. The Harley I got...I still worry as it had been sitting in the dealer stock for well over a year. It had 30 miles on it at delivery. How many people sat on it? Did somebody fart when they sat on it? Did they beat on it too hard on the test drive? All that kind of stuff drives me nuts.

Funny article..

My first 3 were new bikes. I couldn't sleep the nights before or after. Later, I have only bought used bikes and never got the same high. Hadn't thought about it until this article.

Gabe.. what does "consumer self-testing" mean for a pharma company? It is "tongue-in-cheek"?

As someone who has never bought a new bike (or any new vehicle), I just don't understand the obsession with brand new bikes, but I'm sure glad that there are plenty of people who think how you think :)

OK dude it's chevy vs ford

Folks used to be really into buying new cars and motorcycles. In Olden Times, you were a Buick Man or a Chevy Man or a Studebaker Man (ladies let the big strong man do all that complex car-selection brainwork) and you would buy a new car every year or two. My great-grandparents, Abraham and Ada, would take the train from Vallejo to Detroit every other year, buy a new Cadillac, and drive it home. Amazing, right? They were born in tiny, muddy shtetls in Hungary in the 19th century. Talk about class mobility; it’s like Beverly Hillbillies, but with Jews.

cataract and buick(sounds like someone barfing) are all gm.
your lack of mention of ford offends me, please flog yourself 21 times with a wet noodle.

the new bike high? I usually have the new bike low, the exception was the 02 ZX6R I bought for 2 grand in 2011, far exceeded my expectations.
