New and excited rider, need help picking bike

Hello everyone,

My name is Mike, I'm 34 years old, I've lived in the East Bay (Hayward, Dublin) most of my life, driven manual transmissions for 95% of my driving career and have owned a few somewhat quick vehicles (most recent a 2016 Camaro SS). Never rode until I took the CMSP course last weekend in Hayward. Erin and Scott were great instructors!

I just got my M1 license yesterday, but trust me....I know that all that means is that I can legally ride a motorcycle on public roads. It doesn't mean it's a wise thing to do, at least in certain conditions/situations, which is why I intend to find some parking lots and practice the drills we did at the CMSP course, over and over, especially panic stops and swerving.

The bike selection process has been overwhelming. I've always wanted a sport bike, but I'm open to getting a standard/naked bike.

I don't want to spend more than I have to, ~$6K or so would be around my comfort limit for a bike, new or used. If new, obviously the options are limited to something like an R3 or a Ninja 400. Or, a used 300 sport bike, or used SV650 or FZ-07.

FWIW, I'm 6'1", 185, 33" inseam.

This is a list of bikes some guy I know gave me based on us being similar physical dimensions.

Sv650
Sv650s
Sv650sf
Used or the new 2018 models are a bargain and after 8 years with mine I can't find a good reason to get rid of mine. It does it all and has great after market support.
Gladius
Fz6r
Yzfr3
Fz07
Duke 390
Honda cb 500 series
Kawi ninja 300

And I will definitely be spending whatever I need to for gear. I already have a helmet and gloves, but I'll get everything else before I take my first ride.

Anyways, thanks for reading, I'm happy to be a member of this forum, and I look forward to having some fun with you guys! Any help or feedback would be appreciated very much.

Thank you!

Mike

Welcome. Since you're a tall guy have you considered something like a single for your first ride? Say, a DRZ400, DR650, WR250... Plenty of legroom, simple to work on, won't matter if you drop it (and you will) and they are just plain fun. Plus they don't have ungodly amounts of power to get you into trouble as a newer rider.

Welcome to riding! As an instructor, I recommend starting off with the thinking about what your first bike's purpose is: to be great for learning how to ride on. For most people that means unintimidating cost, weight, power and size.

Most of the bikes you listed fit that pretty well. The dual purpose singles (DR650, DRZ400, etc) fit that bill well also.

For $6k your options are wide open.

For $3-3.5k you can easily find decent 650 twins (SV650/Ninja 650). If you give up some cosmetics you can bring that price down to well under $3k.

Craigslist is a great place to shop. Don't necessarily buy the first bike you find.

Read BARF's noob forum:

Lots of great resources there.

If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me directly if you like. I am teaching at Las Positas College in Livermore tomorrow drop by and say hello.

Ok, well, thanks for the replies everyone, but it's already done. Last night the guy was nice enough to drive the bike to my house, and let me test ride it with no pressure whatsoever.

I got a 2008 SV650 for a very good price :D It seems to be in okay condition. We'll see when I get it checked out by a mechanic, any suggestions for somewhere in the East Bay, closer to Dublin the better?

Nice choice! Yes, you can go to cycle gear or motowerx in Livermore. I'd also recommend you hit Moto guild on treasure island to find the rest of your gear. They have a large selection of used gear and you'll save a lot of $ getting gear there.

Once you're comfortable on the freeway you can also go there to change tires, change oil, etc.

It also needs new tires installed asap, where can I go? Is Cycle Gear okay?

Welcome to BARF... nice bike by the way!

You might also try Jason at Motowrx in Livermore. He has good prices on most gear and tires, and exceptionally good price for tire mounting. He's super knowledgeable on most things moto related.
