Need a mechanic to fix SV carb issues..

My SV runs like dookie. It idles fin, but dies when you try to give it any gas. Willing to pay for someone to come fix it up for me. Just need it to run well enough to ride. Once I can ride it, I can get it to a pro.

Sick of troubleshooting... help...

Check the vacumn line from the carb to the fuel tank shut off valve. Check the coil connections. Sounds like fuel starvation. Check the carb vent lines under the carbs to see if one is pinched. Open the air filter and see if there is a squirrel in the air filter.

We found a snake in an air filter once.

what exactly is it doing? ie, what gear, throttle position, rpm, etc...

In neutral, it'll fire up, run fine, but once I give it any kind of throttle it dies. Starts right back up again. The problem started after I got the bike painted, so I was thinking pinched line could be the problem, but I can't find anything that seems wrong so far.

Tried it cold, warm, still nothing. Well, by warm, I mean I let it idle for 10 minutes and it acted exactly like it did when it was first started.

I was going to try to get in with Rob @ Evo, but I can't even get it to run, so riding it down the street won't happen.

me 1st guess would also be something with the tank/lines/etc.. if it was running fine before. are all the vents clear on the tank side? 2nd thought is something with the float valve, dirty or stuck, though it'll usually leak a little fuel if this is the case.

Thanks Ernie and Shawn.

As far as I can see, there's only the one vent coming out of the petcock. Is there an additional one anywhere on the 1st gen SV that anyone knows about?

If not, I'll pop the tank up, trace the lines, and see if I can track this down.

I'll also try running the bike with the gas cap open in case there's a vent that's plugged there (like the GSXR's always used to get)

I'll keep you guys posted. :thumbup

there should be 1 obviously for the fuel, and there's a vacuum line that comes out of the front of the petcock. that goes to the rear intake boot

Need for Speed
If the bike sits a lot and has CV carburetors, the throttle slide(s) may not be opening. Which means that it is gummed up and needs to be cleaned. If this is the case, I would recommend getting the carb(s) boiled out and cleaned up real good. Then set all the setting and you should be good to go. Some carbs even have accelerator pumps on them, that could cause the same problem. Also check to make sure you have good fuel flow.

The best way to trouble shoot is get a shop manual and start looking.

According to the break down of the carbs on RA site, it does look like there may be a vacuum type of accelerator pump in the picture. Here is the link:

there are two petcock lines. One to the carbs one to the rear cylinder intake boot to provide vacumn to open the petcock.

If you took the tank off and only hooked up one line, you are not getting ANY gas to the carbs and it is idling on the residue in the bowls

Yeah, both lines are hooked up all good and healthy. I'll pop the tank up tonight and see if I can track this bitch down.

No hose kinks
Air Filter looks great
Vacuum is strong from the base of the carb to the petcock

Seems like fuel or air starvation make the most sense. Maybe that clogged jet that was mentioned?

Anyhow, time has been the hardest part for me lately with work... If anyone knows of anyone that'd help me out, I'd be willing to pay to expedite... PM me for details, btu I'm willing to NOT be cheap to get this thing on the road quick.

I do have a jet kit that needs to be installed, so maybe if someone is willing to install that, it'll get me closers to running. I have a friend that can Dyno tune it for me if the kit is installed enough that I can ride it for a few miles...

Help :cry

I've seen entire families of mice sucked through a motor and end up as a pink-grey splatter on the wall more than once...

2 strokes do the best job....
