Other officials briefed on the inquiry said they had heard no suggestion that the Navy commandos had been doing anything illegal.

You mean like being in a foreign country conducting military operations with no formal declaration of war................ just some arbitrary interpretation of a decree that specifically states military action in only two countries, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Isn't this a crime that took place in Mali and is therefore under the jurisdiction of the police force in Mali? Has the US government subverted justice by spiriting the accused out of the country?

my understanding is that US military personnel are under US military jurisdiction no matter where they are

they might also be under Mali jurisdiction, I'm not sure how that works, but they can be punished under UCMJ

Anyone read an official accusation by the US military or the government of that country?

This is how it starts, a speculation and then someone uses the word accusation based on nothing as if it is a fact. Then comes the loaded question asking for a defense of something no one really knows anything about.:rolleyes

It's the military, most of us will never know what really happened, and the few that find out won't be able to talk about it.

Sucks that a young Green Beret lost his life, we'll very likely never know why.

Actually, spiriting murder suspects out of the country seems to be not that different from the Vatican moving child rapist priests to posts in other countries ahead of the authorities.

This will all likely be swept under the rug and nobody will really serve any time for their crimes. Don't want to tarnish the image of the institution. They don't care about the individual who was killed or his family.

Given that everyone involved was US military, it wouldn't surprise me if there was an agreement with Mali regarding jurisdiction.

It happened at a US embassy, so it's US soil. And I believe all active duty military matters fall under US jurisdiction, at least according to the US.
