Navy Hospital ship may have hit the Arizona.

DMV lines will move slower out of respect and there is a $5 'Repair the wetland part of Arizona,' now being assessed on all transactions, but it doubles the length of annual registrations.

What the shit is this...
Fuck. :(

I've pulled in there with a Nimitz-class carrier. Slightly larger than the hospital ships. It's a tight squeeze, but manageable. Sad that the maneuvering team screwed this one up. Gawd, of all the places to be a hundred yards off course. :(

doesn't it seem a bit emotional and shortsighted to leave a derelict blocking Pearl Harbor?

I'd say it was the Tug crew and not the maneuvering crew

I doubt they were under sail

"Abandon in place" has a purpose. Humans need reminders of our past mistakes and accomplishments. I'm ok with waiting until the sea dissolves the tomb of those sailors.

"Insignificant Other"
I didn't read the article. Did the ship actually hit the Arizona, or did it just hit the floating memorial?

Edit: never mind. It sounds like they may have just hit both.

If there is one thing Americans are wildly sentimental about, it is WWII. The Arizona is our most sacred WWII monument. It holds our honored dead and is the starting point of our great war. There is no room there to be practical.

Its a tomb for 1500 men.

I can appreciate the significance of the site. I respect what it represents.

just remember for second we cleared Ground Zero completely to build a new tower we didn't build on top of the wreckage.

we also cleared the wreckage of all the other ships

The "footprints" of the towers are memorial pools, the foundations of the original towers remain as part of it.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I've only been on submarines but once a tug took lines the safety of the vessel belongs to them.

The captain is going to get it for this. It's his vessel and the safety falls to him-if the tugs were pushing him off course, he should've caught it and brought it to their attention.

yeah, when we slammed into the dock in Diego Garcia and caused a few M in damage - the Brit Tug Captain got fired and skipper didn't

:dunno

I just speak from wardroom experience ymmv

...for limited time...
The Captain is responsible for the ship BUT not for its navigation (in the harbor). Once a pilot is embarked, which happens long before entering any harbor, the Captain relinquishes responsibilty for the navigation and handling, although the helm/steering is still done by, in this case Navy or Merchant Marine sailors.

As far as the ship being "under sail", it is possible (likely with a ship this size) that they still use ships propulsion in the manuevering.

I have been in and out of Pearl many times on an Aegis Cruiser. It is pretty tight to make that turn for a huge ship and those hospital ships are huge, and ungainly.

The USS Arizona Memorial is not a tourist attraction, a monument or anything of the sort.
It is a tomb and a memorial. Full Stop.
