My Austrian Father-In-Law

Have you ever been to Austria, it's pretty fricken cool as far as I can tell. Modern, clean (Innsbruck is their biggest city, no?). Villach, Austria produced a cool dude named Andreas, who still has a thick accent and lots of stories...

(1934ish) Little Andreas was three or four years old (they didn't count back then) and he went out for a farm tour by himself one day, hopping fences and crossing the Austrian countryside. He toured the neighbors' barns and fields, exploring in the way little trouble making Austrian boys will do. He ended up realizing at sundown that he was lost and in a Scheiße (y) situation. Luckily he was (and IS) a resourceful lad and figured he could bunk up in the sheep den of the farm he was currently invading. Of course while all of this was going on his dad, mom, aunts, and uncles were searching the town for him, as he slept cozily, until he was finally found the next morning.

This guy has taught me so much, and I am thankful beyond words for what he has given me in this life (including his little hottie daughter). I should post up the stories about finding ex nazi machine guns, how he worked on the Canadian Pacific Railroad, lived in Hawaii, Canada, USA, and bought a new, from the factory 1969 VW camper van and toured all over the place!! :cool

It's a beautiful place, but I've missed all the big cities. I was just there to :ride

Dude, dont leave us hanging like that.

I need to get a refresher before I try to recount that one, but there are lots of stories of hungry Russians wandering onto their 'farm' looking for food and shelter, guns they found and shot the shit out of... He had a pet crow for some time. Of course, they couldn't afford to feed it, sent it to a relatives farm where it was killed by a cat ( it thought it was a human after all...). 8 kids, dad the 'reluctant' Nazi comes up missing when he was young. And I bitch about my wife having to do the dishes because our dishwasher is broke :teeth

Didn't get to go there, but I did stay on the same block as the house Mozart was born in :teeth, and have drinks in a bar that was hollowed out of rock ( there's a fun story there too! "This is not America" was yelled at us... Ooops).

I was recently there and the high-light was a visit to the Leopold Museum to see some Klimpt's and Schiele's in person for the first time, two of my favorite artists. Oh and the schnitzel!

My gal was saying how they tried to see a bunch of Klimpt's work but the museum was closed the day they were there and they left for Paris the next day... Honkey problems... He has some beautiful works though...

i adore everything about the german and the austrain people, their culture and the magnificent countryside of both countries, but let's call a spade a spade - assuming you are speaking of the language, there is nothing lilting or pretty about either.

No, really. I like the sound of austrian German. I really find it pleasing to the ear, moreso than any other spoken German. I love the german language. It may not be pleasing to all but it was my real passion in school.

If you don't speak German it may all sound awful to you. :dunno

For some odd reason, I was saw "Austrian father-in-law" and thought

I was going to get to that story later!!

Some of his favorite stories are of his time working on the Canadian Pacific Railroad. He lived on the train, riding the line, fixing phone lines. His favorite part of the stories seems to be the big meal at the end of the day, usually with steak or some big hunk of meat, as much as they wanted. One time there was a tricky repair that needed to be done. A pole was hanging out over a cliff of some sort, such that the repairman would be up the pole with a huge drop below them. A big strapping dude starts thumping his chest about how he'll do it, no problem, look out here I come... Well the guy got halfway up and froze, the pole was swaying. He was stuck. Andreas is not a big guy, about 5'6" ish and 150lbs soaking wet, but he was able to help the guy get down and climb up and do the repair like a boss.

He comes over and hangs with us from time to time, I'm going to grill him next time he's here.
