Beautiful!

Did you get any pics of the elusive Kevin 714 mammal?

No Kevin sightings. But we saw other interesting creatures.

So Khwai was really cool and we saw lots and lot of cool animals. Here is a kudu and some baboons

This was a young male elephant. They like to walk up and act aggressive, but they rarely do anything

But we wanted to see a leopard. God did we ever. And while we had seen tracks everywhere, including next to our tent in the morning, we hadn't actually seen a leopard.

We did however see where one slept the night before. You can see the front legs up top, rear legs behind and the tail at the very bottom left of the photo.

So we had our sundowner, said goodnight to the birds, and went back to camp:

As usual, I wandered off a bit and took a couple of star shots

Sorry Bruce. Can you access Facebook?

Anyways, We spent three nights at Khwai. You can't imagine how amazing this is. First of all, let me describe the smell of Botswana. You'd think being in Africa, with all of the heat and desert and large animals eating other large animals, it would smell like sweat, blood, and fear. Instead it's sage. The amazing scent of sage was everywhere. It permeated everything and was the one constant throughout the trip. Additionally, wild basil grew everywhere. It was ubiquitous. It looked like an herb garden.

Anyways, saw lots of stuff in Khwai; look at it:

After Khwai, we wandered off to Savuti National Park.

Savuti is famous for having a pride of lions that have specialized on killing elephants. Killing fucking elephants.

It also has topography. So most of the Okavango Delta is incredibly flat. The only topography forms when termites build mounds, than trees grow on those mounds and catch sediment from the floodwaters. After a while islands form but the whole area is incredibly flat. Savuti has some large volcanic rock outcroppings that form hills with cliffs. Perfect habitat for a variety of animals. Savuti also has a huge marsh and veld (large frigging meadow that goes on for miles). In this you see more grazing animals and less aquatic stuff. Basically a bit of a change.

On the way, we saw the ear of a leopard. Fuck yeah. An ear.

Then we saw another leopard. We were way out in the bush at this point. Most animals in the middle of the parks are fairly used to people and just ignore you. But out in the bush they are very wary of anything and it's rare to see them. If you do, it's a feeting moment. You can imagine how exciting it was to get this shot. Looking at the face, I'm thinking older cat. Can't tell sex.

If I only knew what was in store for me later......

We arrive in Savuti National Park in the late afternoon. Our guide used to work at a camp near here so he knew most of the other guides in the area. We stopped and talked to one guide and after a heated discussion in Setswana, he turned around and said

"Let's go look at some baby leopards".

Yeah. Baby leopards.

Are you fucking kidding me?

No.

Don't be that guy.
WOW... Thank you for sharing. I got so excited reading your post. I've always wanted to go on a legit safari and camp out there.

How much was the cost per person for the safari + trip if you don't mind me asking?

Yes, a lot. The safari runs about 3k or so. Then travel....... However the safari does include all food and drinks etc. And I never in my wildest dreams thought I would see as much as we did. We ran into a lot of people that were doing it on their own with no guide. Generally they didn't see shit. So I think it's definitely worth it to get a guide or go with an established company (and I've never done a guided anything before, usually I do things on my own).

I haven't even posted my best photos yet.

Most people I know spend around 10k total. Safaris are no joke

Airfare to Africa isn't cheap as Southern Africa is really far lol

One thing I've learned doing underwater photography in far-off places, a good guide is worth every penny. They'll see so much more than you will, and provide a lot of color for what you see.

Bring on the best photos!
