Mushroom hunting

I'd like to set up a trip to go pick some mushrooms.

I'm think we could ride or drive up to Salt Point State Park, where the picking is legal and fun. We could either do a day trip, or camp out and have a mushroom cookout.

I'm not exactly sure what's happening up there right now, but it should be going. I figure within the next month, things should be good for:

yellowfeet chanterelles

black trumpets

hedgehogs (although they seem to be absent this year so far)

golden chanterelles

If you are interested, post up and let me know when you are available, as well as your knowledge and experience picking mushrooms.

I've been picking edible mushrooms for about 15 years. I do not know all or even most of the mushrooms in the forest. But I do know the ones I like to pick. In other words, I am not super adventurous and will pass over many edible mushrooms that I am not comfortable identifying. But there are a handful of mushrooms I am comfortable identifying.

Hello Mike,

I'm a complete noob when it comes to mushrooms but I would be interested in joining you when you go.

Sounds like fun. We used to find chanterelles after the rain on our land up in Humboldt. Delicious sauteed with a little butter.

I'd be down if I'm free and I've got plenty of cargo space on my bike if anyone wanted help getting some home.

Interested in a mushroom picking outing (with my 10yo in tow). My grandmother was an expert picker and taught me a few things, but it's been so long that I'd forgotten everything. Have 4x4 that seats five.

Sounds like a plan. Let me think about the timing and whatnot. I know that porcini have been coming up on the coast, but that can be touch and go, and involved a long ass drive. I've been skunked too many times to go just for that. If the weather is good, come january things should be amazing. Locally, I don't think anything is coming up. I'll let you know when it looks more promising.

Totally missed this thread! Are there any general rules for identifying mushrooms that are good/bad? I've heard that anything growing on wood is edible, but I dunno. I'm gonna post pics and pester you when they start popping up around here. :)
