Looking for something that im not tied to a phone while running or app. User friendly. Dont want a chest band HR monitor. Nice full display. Water resistant to a pool. A solid working GPS

It wont be worn 24/7. Training purposes only but needs to hold up well. Some that i see online that have caught my attention.

Polar Vantage M - The display on this is perfect
Suunto Spartan Sport
Coros Apex

any others i should be considering?

I've got a Garmin 735xt and I love it. The 935 and Fenix are nice too, but more than I wanted to spend. The battery life on this thing is incredible. And for GPS tracking, it's really great.

I am happy with my Fitbit Ionic (fathers day gift 2018) I do wear 24/7 charge lasts 4 to 5 days, depends on use. I have used to track motorcycle rides using Strava. Do get a warning that it looks like I used mechanical means on my bicycle ride. :teeth Just ignore and save.

Apple watch. The native workout app does all sorts of sports, from biking to ellipticals to yoga. If I start swimming, it will recognize it and ask if I want to start recording. Does auto sets based on when I take breaks, and knows what stroke I'm doing based on arm movement. It's borderline creepy how good it is. You can get all sorts of 3rd-party apps for different sports, like Strava for cycling. Also does cellular service so you have voice and text even when away from your phone - this has come in handy more than once.

Another for Apple Watch. Good gps, heart rate monitoring, text and calling along with Bluetooth audio. Knows when I am working out or riding.

Good for tracking sleep and has helped me adjust my schedule by letting me know how many times I was waking up at night.

I use it when I race to monitor my heart rate and was surprised to see it around 55bpm. Was expecting to be 120+ or so but maybe that’s why I’m slow :laughing or maybe it’s because of yoga?

The Fitbit Ionic and Apple watch look good as well.

Was trying to stay away from all distractions like music, cellular and text however, for emergency purposes it might be a good thing while training alone.

Dumb question about the Garmin, it is made to hold up in salt water yes? Also do you need the chest strap for heart rate info?

Yes, it will hold up to salt water, but I haven't tested it. I have some friends that have open water swam in the ocean with theirs and no issues. You do need the chest strap if you want to track HR while swimming. The wrist monitor doesn't work under water, so it shuts off. It is bluetooth and ANT+ compatible, so you can pick virtually any chest strap. I've used mine in the pool quite a bit and it does a pretty good job at tracking my laps.
