MSF Dirtbike School for a Newb?

The Newb of Newbs
Hey all,

I just wanted to get all of your opinions on when the best time to get some dirtbike experience is.

I'm a new rider, <100 miles. I know, just give me time to get more mileage. :laughing

But yeah, people keep saying that riding dirt teaches more "emergency control" techniques compared to street, due to the lower traction.

So, long question short, when is the best time to do dirt? As soon as possible, to get the knowledge in? Or to wait until I get much more mileage and comfortability on bikes in different situations, so that I can get the most out of the experience?

And no, taking it more than once in the next few years isn't really an option at this point. Poor college student. =P

Thanks in advance

The time is now to begin dirt riding. Try to go with another experienced rider to get some tips, and wear good gear.

Dirt riding will help you even as a street rider, and not just for learning to control a bike in low traction situations. Dirt riding will help you refine all your skills, including throttle control, smooth braking, balance, and visual skills, too.

The one thing that is quite different in the dirt vs the street is body position while corning. In the dirt you will push the bike below you to make a turn (not sure how else to explain that), whereas on the street/track, you do just the opposite. Find an experienced dirt rider so he can show you how to get started.
