Movie review: Desolation of Smaug *spoilers*

I want my 3 hours back. I've never seen a movie with conflict and no resolution. The only two story lines are the rise of Sauron (can anybody guess how this story ends?) and the fucking dragon, who doesn't even meet his doom. Lame! After reading the book, which is very different from the movie, Peter Jackson could have killed Smaug in this film and had the conflict over the treasure in the next one, and maybe 30 mins of setting up the event for LOTR. I'm a fan of LOTR, and this movie disappointed me. The theatre was standing room only, and there were many groans and cries of bullshit when the credits rolled. :rofl

Wife and I watched this movie last night, we both liked it a lot. Good value for the money at 2:40 hours of very good action, excellent special effects.

I read all of Robert E. Howard's (and some others) fantasy tales, but no Hobbit books, ya gotta draw the line somewhere, and my line was this side of diminutive folk with big hairy feet. :laughing However, that aspect of the film was easily overlooked.

OTOH, if you're a hard-nosed realist, you won't like any films of this genre.

Funny to see a negative review because I heard it was WAY better than the first chapter of the Hobbit, which they happen to be showing a lot on Premium Cable so I have seen it.

I was planning on waiting for it to come on teevee anyway.

I liked it, I saw it at the IMAX 3d, and the effects were sick. Definetly no L.O.T.R. But it was cool. Lots of great action and fighting scenes. It's long but not boring.

Way better than the first one, after I saw the first one I was like meh, but now I can't wait to see the next one!

don't worry, in another year you can sit through another three hours to see how it all ends.

Ima wait for the extended directors special edition cut blu ray box set. with an additional 12 hours of bonus material of camera setup and such.

tho I wonder, since it's like nothing was edited out of the first movie, what other footage can there be? Or will this be the first movie where the special cut is actualy shorter and more succinct? :)

Peachy!
I fucking *LOVE* LOTR (books and movie) but I was so bitterly disappointed with the first Hobbit I'm not going to see the others. Obviously, it should have only been one movie and fuck Peter Jackson for stretching it out with useless filler scenes AND for reusing all the ooh-ahh tricks from the LOTR series (o.m.g. the eagles are coming, AGAIN! o.m.g Gandalf made himself all scary in a hobbit-house, AGAIN). Ugh, and Radagast...
Man, that movie was shitty. Enjoy installment #2, folks.:p

Yeah I felt the same way about hobbit 1, and I wasn't stoked to see hobbit 2. But I really liked it. Also IMAX 3d is da shiznit.

I can't say I was super impressed with Hobbit 1, and felt generally the same way. Yet, I am still going to see the 2nd and 3rd because I'm a sucker. :laughing

Thanks for validating my decision not to watch the first (or any) PJ Hobbit movie. :laughing

I am also pretending the Hobbit trilogy abortion isn't happening.

Jackson couldn't have done a poorer job.

the first hobbit was so bad, so utterly awful in a "one of the worst movies ive seen in theaters" kind of way, that I refuse to give this series anymore of my money

this. what PJ is doing is worse that what lucas did with star wars.

I dunno...to me, I'm in these movies for the awesome special effects. To get all extreme about 'em seems beside the point. Watching hobbit movies by Jackson is just like a scheduled dream for me, and an enjoyable one at that. I'm sure I'll like this one, but just like the books, the trilogy was more compelling than the Hobbit so it made a better set of movies.

Just like the first one, work is paying for me to see it, during work hours in about an hour. :party

I really don't understand the total rejection some people are having of these pictures. I mean, I assume you left any concept of the literature at the door when they announced it would be a trilogy and were watching them simply as Fantasy Films inspired by Tolkien's work, right?
