Tear that thing down and start over.

I find it difficult to believe they overlooked grouting the rods if the rods are supposed to be grouted, something not right with that story.

I'm sure construction errors are an entirely new phenomena and have nothing to do with the 24 hour news cycle. Good thing I've been saving up my outrage!

95% of them were not grouted. Which makes me wonder why 5% were, then they just said "fuck it!"

These companies should be sued into oblivion for how much that fucking thing costs and how many fuck ups happened.

The economy is good, destroy the companies involved, all the workers can easily find new jobs in construction around here.

It isn't clear to me whether 95% aren't grouted at all or whether they are grouted, just not properly. I'd guess the latter.

From what other people have told me, Brian Maroney is correct - it won't cause a collapse, even in a very large earthquake.

Do you think the state would ever say anything else? Some of the rods FAILED when they were tightened. Imagine the political impact if the bridge was closed long term for repairs....... The state of CA is never going to admit there is a problem. And I am increasingly beginning to believe this was mismanaged and fucked up from the start. Sadly.

I work for a company that engineers bridges, including significant work in the area. The people here who are smarter and more educated than me agree with Brian Maroney.

People smarter and more educated than me thought the Vietnam war was a great idea, and Iraq even better. :laughing

I have no idea whether the bridge is safe or not. I suspect the chances are around 95% that it is. However, given the way the state has behaved and the INCREASING number of problems showing up, I have zero confidence in Caltrans, the state, and their pronouncements. NOBODY is going to risk their job by going against the state's version of what has happened and will happen.

That's why I said 'imagine". If in fact, the bridge turns out to be an utter debacle, which is possible but unlikely, it will turn Sacramento upside down and change the political structure of CA, not to mention destroy the economy of the Bay Area.

If Caltrans even published ANYTHING that even inferred there might be a problem, the impact would be disastrous. So count on them lying in any event. There's nothing else they can do.

Remember, there's almost certainly nothing wrong with the DESIGN. The manufacture of components (Deck plates being warped and installed with filler), the wrong metal used in rods, and lack of grout and water damage all add up to a problematic picture.

They don't think this bridge was a very good idea :rofl but this specific problem isn't particularly important compared to other problems it has.

Had they built a cable stayed bridge instead, for a much lower cost, some of the problems (like this one) would still be likely, while others wouldn't be.

I came to that conclusion years ago. The West Coast's Big Dig and why I have zero faith in the bullet train. Well, one of the many reasons.

I agree with a previous post... all companies responsible should be crushed and the management given a one way space ticket to the sun.

I love that everyone blames the contractors without apparently assigning any blame to the agency that designed this thing, and oversaw the construction.

There's plenty of blame to go around, folks.

Caltrans has performed horribly throughout, their inspections have been meaningless, and the contractors have failed any fiduciary responsibility they had. This is a classic example of government/business collusion and corruption. It was so big and there was so much pressure to get it done that it had no chance of succeeding.

The Bullet train? Fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkk
