Modular helmet users?

I'm in the market for a new helmet this summer, mostly because my trusty HCJ AC-12 Carbon is at least 5 years old, and I'm in the market for something a little less supersport-oriented with more features like pinlock, flip-down sunvisor or Transitions visor, etc.

I've never really considered modulars until recently. There are a couple that I like the look and features of, but am trying to decide if it's the direction I want to go for daily road use. If you started wearing one, do you really thing the flip-up chinbar is worth the potential decrease in safety? I know the modern systems are extremely strong, though I've also heard that some/all are designed to break away under a strong enough impact.

I searched, but no recent conversations about this popped up. :ride :twofinger

Both HJC and Schuberth make modulars with built-in sunvisors. Schuberth also has pinlocks for their visors, not sure about that on HJC.

I'm not worried about the marginal increase/decrease in safety, most hits come above ear level. I did find that the Schuberth is much quieter than the HJC, quiet enough that I can hear my tinnitus. :laughing

I'm liking the looks of the HJC RPHA-Max, which has a sunvisor and full pinlock. I've always worn HJC helmets because they fit my head perfectly.

I'm also loving the looks of the LaZer Monaco Carbon, which has a Transitions visor and full pinlock - I think my old HJC carbon helmet has given me a taste for carbon lids. I've never tried one on, so no idea how it'd fit my dome.

Thanks for the links, there are a zillion to look at! The Schuberths look nice, but too pricy for me.

I have a Shark Evoline. Not sure if they're available in the US any longer.

It allows the chinbar to flip clear over and blend into the back of the helmet so you can wear it while you're riding as an open face helmet. I like that feature.

The chinbar latches seem to be very secure, you have to pull the chinbar forward while you're squeezing the latch mechanism before it will come free. It also has a built in sunvisor.

FWIW, the Shoei GT Air comes standard setup for pinlock (and yes, the insert is included) and a retractable sun shade. It's also the quietest helmet I've ever personally worn. :2cents :thumbup

KHAAAAAN!
Well, I stand corrected. And the RF-1200 seemed to fit my head better than the GT Air. Wasn't a fan of the drop down visor. That's just me.

That is a nice helmet, my next helmet most likely will be a Shoei. :cool

That's not a modular though, is it?

I have purchased Nolan N102 last year to replace 5 year old MASEI modular helmet. MASEI is a Hong Kong company and make helmets in China. Before MASEI, I was using Z1R (Taiwan-made) modular helmet. Since I wear glasses, modular helmets are better. I like Nolan because its very solidly built. The only issue with Modular helmets is the wind noise. Unless you are willing to go for Shoei or Shurbert, most modular helmets are noisy. MASEI was the best of all three and for some reasons Nolan is the worst. It is really noisy and I always wear ear plugs nowadays. If you don't use glasses, a regular full face helmet is better.

I do like the looks of the GT Air, though I don't remember any Shoei ever fitting me properly. I will have to hit up a moto superstore and spend a couple of hours wearing different helmets around when I get back to the states!

you can check out how those modulars do here:

OK, now that is cool. Thanks for the link :thumbup

The HJC I was looking at has a 93% rate of staying locked shut, which is about as good as you could ask for, and is a lot better than the LaZer's 63%, though the overall impact resistance of the LaZer was rated higher.
