Via RoadRacingWorld.com:

Mat Mladin
"A couple of months ago that bug sort of started coming back again," said 41-year-old Mladin, who retired to his home country of Australia after winning his seventh AMA Pro Superbike title in 2009. "I’ve had a few years off, and I’m feeling like I wouldn’t mind getting back on and having a go."

"I’d like to come back and race in America again, for sure," said Mladin.

Mladin needs a teammate so they can have a "wall of animosity" in the garages. Kidding. A Mladin return would definitely add interest to the series.

This would be very big for the series. This is assuming, of course, that Mr. Mladin is in racing shape. Is he talking about this year? Lemme read on...

OK, from the article:

"When asked if he thought it was financially feasible that a team could make it worth his time to come back to AMA Pro Superbike racing, Mladin said, “I’m spoken to a couple of people. The biggest challenge is going to be finding a motorbike to get on. In the end, my old team [Yoshimura Suzuki] now has a paid rider who pays quite a bit of money to ride one of their bikes. So obviously things are very different over there. So as I’ve said to a couple of people, I’m under no illusions that the hardest thing is actually going to be getting on a factory motorbike that is capable of doing the job that needs to be done."

So please excuse my ignorance here... Does Mladin mean that Martin Cardenas is PAYING to ride the bike, or am I reading this wrong?

Also, after reading it is evident that he does in fact need to get back into racing form, so probably not this season. Still I hope this can happen.

Not quite. He's not blind to the economic state of road racing in the US.

I think he knew in 2009. The economy and moto market had was in a downward spiral all during that racing season and there weren't going to be any big paydays even if Mladin had stuck around for 2010. (Remember American Suzuki didn't import ANY 2010 model street bikes.) I'm guessing that was one of the factors in his decision to hang it up.

Maybe he has heard rumors about a possible paying ride or maybe he's just casting about for fun? Mladin has always been a bit contradictory in his statements. Anyway, at least this is from the horse's mouth rather than another rumor from Superbike Planet. Fun to specualte, I guess.

No Chris Clark is paying for his ride or should I say daddy is.

The thing is it wasn't Matt Mladin who dominated AMA for so many years, it was the team of Mladin, Doyle and Bazazz. They were years ahead of anybody else in terms of their professionalism.

It would be pretty hard to replicate that team again and I'm sure Mladin knows that.

comebacks rarely go well.

I loved mat in a weird sort of anti hero kinda way, he was a badass. too bad he never got to GP late in his career when he really took off. he could have done well.

he would be a wsbk champ had he moved on

He did have a kick ass swag/vibe to him. You could feel it.

Not as fast as I look.
I loved that guy. But, I am use to being a black sheep, so I can relate. It was a team effort, no doubt. No offense to anyone, but you could put a barfer on those Yoshi bikes, and I doubt anyone could duplicate Matt's record. I always thought that Miguel Duhamel might have been able to equal Matt's success on the same bike. He is riding around tracks, btw. I wonder if he is planning a comeback, too. It's a retro thing. :laughing
