Are we having fun yet?
Last Saturday, on the return leg from Patterson on Del Puerto Canyon Rd, my Multistrada 1200 handled badly. I stopped and found the rear tire soft and visibly sagging, probably had less than 20 psi in it. I turned around and headed back toward Patterson, about 7 miles away. I rode at around 35-40 mph - wanted get to Patterson before the leaky tire got completely flat, but not too fast to lose control, overheat the tire or bend the wheel. By the time I got to the Chevron station in Patterson, the rear tire was pretty hot to the touch, and the entire tread surface looked slightly melted. So I aired up and took 580/680 home, 88 miles away. I didn’t have a gauge so I went by feel how much air to put in – enough to last for a while, but not too much to blow up the tire. Each time the bike felt great with a hard rear tire. I’d go up to 80 mph for a few minutes to make time, and gradually slow to 60 mph as I guessed-felt the tire got softer, before stopping for another gas station. I aired up 3 more times at gas stations along the way, every 18-20 miles or so. It was after dark, and some stretches of freeway along Altamont Pass and Sunol Grade had no gas stations, so it was kind of iffy during the 2-hr ride home.
I didn’t realize it until thinking back from this latest episode that I’ve had a number of mishaps on the road over the 10 years I’ve been riding. In contrast, I can’t think of the last time I had any problem with a 4-wheeled vehicle on the road. I guess this means riding is more demanding, I’ve made more bad decisions while riding, and bikes are less dependable than cars.
What mishaps have you experienced while riding? Who/what’s to blame? What did you learn each time?
I’ll update my list later.
