MidWest Speed Limits WTF?

Landed in Des Moines IA today at 6:00 commute. Had foot on accelerator doing 45 on a wide four lane city street with minimal traffic. Then I noticed the speed limit: 30mph!

I was in St Louis a couple of years ago on the freeway. Minimal traffic was present at all hours, yet speed limit was 60mph.

Can some of you transplanted Barfers explain why the speed limits are so low with decent wide roads and very minimal traffic?..:rolleyes

Some towns in the mid-west have a limit of 20 mph and a cop is on every corner, if you have Ca plates they will follow you for miles!

I ride and drive at whatever speed I deem appropriate......unless there are speed cameras like in Europe.

This way...That way...
I've noticed life slows down in the middle. East and West coasts buzz. Maybe a bit of action in Chicago, Austin, couple cities in the South. But in the middle. Slows down. Cruise the Harley. No rush. Maybe it's the long winters. I dunno. Just seems like....

Elko, NV. A big wide 4 lane road like El Camino Real (pretty much the main drag of town), and the limit was 15. Sped up to 25-30 to pass a truck pulling a giant hay trailer and got lit up immediately. 15?!? On a giant street. Nice. Good to know I can break the speed limit on a bicycle.

I got pulled over in Blue Ash Ohio for 27 in a 25 with CA plates. The cop goes" You aren't from around here are you?" DUH

On Idaho ST? It's 15 in the school zone. I'm pretty sure it's 25 for the rest of it. Did you have CA plates on the vehicle?:rofl

So forcing everyone to drive at slow speeds == people knowing how to drive? Hmm... Good to know. :laughing

You probably don't understand. Your probabaly just like the rest of the asshole aggrssive drivers out here with the me first mentality

Oh did you forget that driving slower makes your react quicker in emergency situations rather than driving faster.

Well you know what they say about people who assume? :laughing

Well gee willikers I didn't know that! Thanks for pointing it out. Shucks, lets make all the speed limits 15mph no matter what! Safety first you know! :laughing :rolleyes

Hmm, although I might be confused. If they are such good drivers, why do they need speed limits at all? Shouldn't they just drive slow and safely without big government intervention?
