Memorial day saw some massive breakdowns in social distancing.

The clock starts from this weekend, I think we're going to see a significant surge of deaths 5 weeks from now from this weekend.

It's human nature to just think nothing bad happened if they didn't develop a cough following this weekend, so I think the spread is going to be significant.

What do others think?

I'm gonna start a thread about kittens chasing butterflies for every one of your feel-good threads, Brett. :laughing

I'm actually thinking through things before starting threads. We have a very clear date for a series of social distancing getting set aside, so all of these are going to be hitting at around the same time, so it made sense to me to put it into it's own thread so that we could keep track of what happens as a result of these actions, otherwise I would have posted this into the Georgia thread, but their timeline is different so it would muddy the water to combine the two.

I think that's the engineer/scientist in me that wants to see effect from cause to better understand what's really happening.

I do appreciate your humor, it's definitely something we've seen too little of the last several months. :thumbup :ride

Back in April the WH said that by Memorial Day the nation would have the coronavirus epidemic behind us. I guess some people took their word for it.

We will see what shakes out... all these things add up.

To exactly what is TBD.

As long as Yosemite is closed its fairly safe up here in the foothills. Once the tourist come back all bets are off. I'm OK with dying and disappearing from the universe but lying in bed fighting for every breath for a couple of weeks until you die is not the way I'd like to go.

I think Tyrion Lannister said it best on how to die. "In my own bed, with a belly full of wine and a maiden's mouth around my cock, at the age of eighty"

I'd prefer puppy's chasing butterflies myself.

Agreed.

IDK how it will shake out, but I think it will be a distinctly unique collection of events that will give us a lot of information. Unfortunately, that information might be coming a bit too late for another potential event when July 4th weekend rolls around.

With something like this, knowledge and data gives us the best tool for the optimal way of dealing with this virus going forward.

A certain percent of people, I think it's 1/3, are going to congregate no matter what the day is, Holiday or not.

They just don't see it our way even though even we are "relaxing" SIP; outdoor dining allowed here in Sonoma County as of last Friday.

My friend in Miami sent this from the Miami Herald.

Dadeland is a very large enclosed mall in South Miami.

"Elsewhere in Dadeland, Kay Young shopped with friends for clothes.

The group, from Atlanta, is in town for a vacation, an unusual sight in pandemic times.

Young walked around the mall without a mask, although signs were posted at the entrance and within the mall advising that masks are required.

Young said wearing masks isn’t obligatory in Atlanta any longer and she was surprised at how many people wore them in Miami.

Young said she’s not afraid of getting the virus because she has a strong immune system.

She hopes her group’s outdoor plans for the week won’t be derailed by the rain, although public beach access is limited.

“We’re putting it in God’s hands,” Young said."

There was a long conversation, last night in this house, with the resident 19 y.o about the importance of being steadfast in social distancing, it ended in tears. Besides the % of folks who just aren't going to social distance or wear masks, I'm starting to see sane, rational and intelligent friends and neighbors start to relax in distance and makes wearing.

Anyway, the real reason I'm posting is to share this feel good video:
(Spoiler, it's otters chasing a butterfly)

I took the long way home yesterday, drove DC to lower great highway then through golden gate park. Hella people out, compliance with social distancing varying all over the place. I'd bet on a spike too

I'm a "if i get it i get it"kinda of guy.
But being the source of someone else possibly suffering through that would wreck me with guilt. That's why I'm taking government's advice to the public more seriously than other IDGAF folks.

There was stop and go traffic to get to Stinson on Monday which surprised me a bit as I thought the beach was still closed. It was clearly packed from what I could see descending into town. I didn't stick around (hadn't planned to) and continued my ride. I'd not be surprised if we see a spike in cases of course, all these efforts to social distance so far might have paid off and there isn't much virus circulating, or, locally we were fine until people came into state to see family (I know of someone who flew in from NY and visited family and friends for a BBQ over the weekend). Guess we'll see what the numbers say in the next few weeks.

I rode through on saturday and Traffic was backed up about a mile coming down panoramic highway, no idea how backed up it was on highway 1 as I was headed up to petaluma. No idea WTF people were thinking as all the parking lots in town were closed and the local sheriff was busy printing out parking tickets for everyone trying to leave their cars on the shoulder.

When they close the beaches they also lock and close the bathrooms. Do you think those people going to the beach thought that one through?

They had some interesting events in HMB over the weekend due to this failed thinking.

Wear swim trunks and go for a quick dip, problem solved. Not that i would ever do something like that, nope. It does require determination in cold water though.

On a related note, I knew some divers who dove in wetsuits who used something like that to warm up the inside of their wetsuit as they were getting into the water.

Nobody wanted to be around their wetsuits once they had dried. :rofl

I used to surf a lot and I would pee in my suit every single time and so does every other surfer and anyone who says they don't are likely lying. It gives you about 3-5 seconds of blessed warmth.

I went to the beach (in Aptos) on memorial day. The bathrooms were open and the beach was open after 5pm.

It was pretty good. Nice weather and people were pretty far away from one another.
