So I am going to be starting training as a K9 handler soon. I just received the dog today. He is a 3-year-old Belgium Malanois. I'm excited. I've never done any dog training before, so this is going to be new to me. The dog has been trained. I just need to be trained and certified in handling the dog. Wish me luck.

So when you yell for a suspect to freeze, what happens now?

Congrats on the new partner!

Congrats! That's something I've always wanted to do in my career.

Is he cross trained or just protection/apprehension? Careful with those Maligators... Sometimes they don't like to let go. :laughing

Also, what kennel did he come from? We used to use Adlerhorst, but will be getting our next dog from Witmer Tyson supposedly.

For that breed, I think that's probably a good thing. Mal's aren't always quite heavy enough for some police work. Re-watch the video of the guy hoping the White House fence (I think it was Q4 last year) and two Mal's couldn't stop him. One shy'd away when the guy kicked at it (serious training issue- lack of bravery) and the other clamped on and held- but wasn't enough weight to stop the guy from legging it across the lawn a ways.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be on the receiving end...

Probably issues with those dogs. I've had one male Mali break my skin through the bite suit, but he was a big dog (prob 85-90lbs) and another small (~60lbs) female knock me on my ass several times because she would hit at full stride like a ton of bricks.

I prefer Shepherds, but Malis and cool dogs too.

The issue is them not outing when the handler tells them to. As long as the handler doesn't give them the out command, they should stay on.

Cross trained drugs and apprehension. Ours is a special case, cuz we got him donated.

So, does he ride pillion or do you? :ride:laughing

I tried to let him drive, but he obviously wasn't trained on a motor...almost killed us. :laughing

Like this?

So far so good. It is day # 3. He has really taken to me. I won't start training with him another week or so. This is just the bonding period where he is staying with me. I don't think he slept the entire first night he was here. He just kept pacing in circles around the kennel. He has calmed down now. I think he is less anxious as he is getting used to his new home.

He hasn't acted agressive with me or my family at all. The trainer says he's like two different dogs on and off duty. When the work collar goes on he knows it's time to work.

I always come back to GSD's being the ultimate police dog too. Rotties are tougher, and I'm a proud owner of one, but they "think" too much. A GSD will simply do as they are told.

Walk him- a massive amount and make it fun. Nothing will bond you better! :thumbup

Good looking dog! Very cool new assignment too. I know very little about police K9s. Are commands given in German? I recall hearing that someplace.

Usually depends on the dog and handler and what they are trained and comfortable with. Dogs can be trained in several different languages. One K9 at my previous agency was trained on commands in six different languages. The handler picked which he was comfortable with and stuck with it.

Pro tip, actually I don't have any tips. :p

So you're done with human partners who don't buy lunch ? :laughing
