It's only unlawful to wear a mask while committing a public offense and since a helmet conceals your identity anyway, I think you'll be fine.

Reference California Penal Code Section 185.

So if one were speeding, and therefore committing a public offense, especially with a tucked under or removed license plate.......hmmmm. Additional misdemeanor? :teeth:nerd

Could 26708 CVC (TL;DR) Material Obstructing or Reducing Driver's View apply? Stretch?

Efffff it. If he didn't signal a turn, he's getting booked on the misdemeanor. Mask over the helmet or not, he's covering his face with the helmet. :laughing

OP: I'm joking of course. Wear your Halloween costume. Enjoy the day. Ride safe.

26708 VC specifies no materials affixed to the vehicle which would reduce the driver's view. I don't think this would apply, but I'm not 100% sure either.

Technically it's probably illegal to use because it impairs your visibility. And I think you'd be a fool to wear it while riding because of that very reason. Doesn't matter how "see-thru" it is, it's still going to greatly restrict your vision. Not what you want while riding or driving.

But for some fun, put it on your helmet just before you go into a bank.

Thing is, though, any face shield other than clear reduces the amount of light passing through it. Small stretch to "impairs visibility", sure.
As pointed out, legality is based on being attached to the vehicle.

Even if it's technically legal to wear while riding, that doesn't make it a smart thing to do. Driving (or riding) while wearing masks and other things that restrict your vision in some way is not smart either. It's dangerous enough to drive, much more so to ride, and restricting your vision for the sake of "fashion" is just plain dumb.

And yea, I've been in banks many, many times with my helmet on. Only once was I asked to remove it and I said no. I then asked the guy if he'd require a Muslim woman to remove her veil. Or if he made folks at Halloween take off their masks and makeup. He said nothing and walked away.

And regarding tinted screens. Yea, the technically restrict vision. But it's all about degrees. With a tinted screen, you can still see through the whole thing. And often, your pupils will adjust to the lowered light level and you can often see just fine. The problem I have is with things that you can't see through and which therefore, diminish your field of view.

That's kind of a jackass move. Why try to make some half-assed point at the cost of making someone else uncomfortable/fearful? This example is worse than the "Open Carry" contingent, IMO.

Since when did wearing a motorcycle helmet become associated with bank robbers? Have helmet wearing people robbed banks? Sure. So have people wearing halloween masks. And other disguises. You sure as hell won't see any bank manager come over to a veiled Muslim and request that they remove the veil. And you can be sure some hell would be raised if they tried. Same with someone who's covered because of injury or some deformity. Those who have a problem with wearing a motorcycle helmet inside a building need to do a reality check.

The difference in your examples is that there is compelling a religious or medical reason for not doing so. You, on the other hand, are just being stubborn and difficult.

It's not about motorcycle helmets. It's about purposefully concealing your identity in a bank. It hinks people up. It's not normal social behavior to be wearing a motorcycle helmet when you're not riding a motorcycle. Social norms play a big role in how police officers and citizens react to what they see. Don't be That Guy... If you decide to be him, don't complain because society reacts how they do.

I would expect anyone in a bank wearing a Halloween mask or other disguise to be treated differently than Joe Schmo depositing a check in his polo shirt and Dockers.

It seems to me that best practices for a bank policy would be to require that EVERYONE, regardless of religious or other reasons, to keep their faces uncovered while inside the bank. They should post signs and immediately challenge those who don't comply while remaining ready to put their safety plan in action.
