Maple syrup smell

There is a faint maple syrup smell coming from our laundry room. The laundry contains a wash/dryer, water heater and a direct open vent to the foundation.

The smell is more noticeable when the washer or dryer is going. I assume it’s the heat making the smell more pungent.

I’m not an hvac guy nor have I messed with washers, dryers or anything of that nature.

Anyone got an idea what it could be? Google says mold can smell like maple syrup.

Whatever that means
someone spilled maple syrup while eating their pancakes while doing laundry.

or

a canadian washed their clothes.

A car in space...hmmmm.
I'd do a spot check for mold. Especially if you let the area steam up when the dryer is running.

I'd get it checked for mold.

I dunno, maybe one of the studs is oozing sap and you associate it with syrup but its the conifer sap smell. Just spit ballin. I am assuming you pulled the washer back to make sure its not leaking on the floorboards. That also makes a kind of woodsy smell...

get it while it's easy
is your dryer electric or gas? if gas, you may have a leak (one of the chemicals in it smells very sweet).

If you ever wash and dry clothes or rags exposed to vegetable or linseed oil it puts out a caramel sweet smell. Oxidized oil can catch fire, if you haven't recently clean out you dryer you might want to, another fun job.

Kiddo lives in Battle Creek, land of breakfast cereal. Before Kellogg moved production to Mexico the entire town would smell like whatever they were making that day.

The smell of maple syrup was Tuesdays if I remember correctly.

Google also says that chemicals from an HVAC system leak can smell sweet. Seems like a good place to start. Stick yer head down in there and see if there's drippin' stuff about.
