lumber tax

well here in ca we have to pay another tax when buying lumber, this tax is based on how much you buy.
sad that the fools under the dome of doom see thing's like we need to pay more taxes.

but my question is, does nevada have this penalty tax for lumber?

i am looking to buy a quality of lumber for a couple of projects, and need to save moneys so if one does not have to pay a penalty tax in another state, they get the contract.
no not building a house, or anything to sell, so no way to pass on this penalty tax to another. i am the end user. and before any screams about bugs or 'other" most lumber comes from the same very small number of saw mills still working in the pacific north west. so what ever state it is sold in... it is the same.
if nothing else nevada has a lower sales tax. maybe even lower prices for the mtr to start with?

i am in reno a lot these days so not a "special" trip for me.

Look around on craigslist too, in the materials section. There aRe a surprising number of small sawmills around the state that might be a good option for you as well. They're all full dimension rough sawn so far as I can tell, so if you need smooth 1.5"x3.5" 2x4 you might be out of luck.

Bought a bunch of lumber early this year and don't recall a special tax.

I suspect you might have trouble going through the CA Ag inspection checkpoint with a truck full of lumber

It's a 1% tax for "re-forestation". Prolly more like some politico's found another means to line their pockets.

Would that tax go for used lumber as well? Isn't there an opportunity to buy that instead?

not a problem at any ag inspection point.

reread my posting:
i already go to reno a lot so no special trip.

calculate the difference in gas used when loaded/unloaded.

You haul a few thousand pounds of lumber, you're burning way more fuel.

Make sure you fill up that tank on the Reno side to avoid paying Cali tax on that as well

Oregon has the lumber mills. Many small independent mills that do private sales routinely. They'll load up what you brought with what you've bought. For heavy loads best bring a Truck. cause Trailer's payload isn't enough.
Be saving allot more than the tax. As the amount will be enough for Wholesale pricing.

We get all our Hardwood from a Mill East of Salem Oregon. Also little South East of Portland. Its kiln dried but rough planed. So have to use a thickness planner and get it straight edged. They had Dimensional lumber but didn't look into it. Did look into Home Depot in Oregon the prices are right back up to high levels for both Hardwoods and dimensional lumber.

The price difference on the Hardwoods from the Mill vs Local lumber Yard. Rough planed mill hardwood vs planed store Hardwood. Roughly a quarter the price and they have clearance pricing roughly sixth of the cost.

That is Hardwood tho. Might inquire with the Mills about selling processed wood like Ply and Dimensional Lumber.

Sounds to me like trying to avoid a 1% tax is going to end up costing you more.

not paying a tax is a win.

not going to be buying couple thousand pounds of lumber. at least not all at once.
and it is mostly down hill back to ca. so not much fuel burned anyhow.

biggest load would be only about 10 sheets of 3/8 plywood.
