looking seriously at a Honda CB900F, 2004, real clean, well maintained, moving up from my 2001Suzuki 500gs. Feedback anyone with direct experience?

That's quite an upgrade from a GS500. I think you'll find the 599 might be more reasonable than the 919.

Could be my failing memory at play here...But...

It doesn't seem like there was CB900F, in 2004.

I had one in 1984 (or so). Very nicely featured bike then...Except the suspension was too bargain basement.

The suspension bar wasn't set too high back then, though. :laughing

2nd Gen CB900F (2002-2007) was the 919.

Ok, first, don't listen do the dildos who will say you need move up in 50cc increments. If you have any real riding experience on the GS500, you'll likely be fine on the 919. That said, get something better. :D

I've had 2 '04 Honda 919s (the CB900f). Incredibly, utterly reliable bike, and a great all-rounder. Rode mine across the US and back. Loctite the bar ends and the shifter as they like to vibrate their way out.

The 599 is similar; smaller and more nimble with better suspension, but the 599 is carbed and the 919 has the convenience and ease of fuel injection.

Agreed, except for the shifter, mine never vibe'd out and I can't speak to the 599. Other thoughts:

Very nice engine, smooth power delivery, linear delivery throughout the revs, it never surprises you and does just what you'd expect. Which makes it easy to ride fast and at parking lot speeds.

It's a comfortable bike.

It's heavy at a standstill.

I've had two too and the last one I had, an 02 or 03 had the worst stock suspension ever, virtually non-adjustable other than rear pre-load. But I think they added rear rebound and f4i forks by 04, which should help a lot.

It's a general mule, it can be your commuter, back roads bike or a nekkid tourer.

Good luck.

Couldn't be worse suspension than a GS500E. Mine had the worst suspension and carburation of any bike I've ever owned. If I remember correctly, the 919 has a reworked CBR900rr engine in it. A very stout, extremely reliable engine. I know a guy with a 919 that absolutely loves it. Probably a good, relatively inexpensive choice.

I'd like to see it happen....And...feedback on suspension setup.

We used to do quite a lot, before the adjustments came on the scene....

Made our own shims for preload setting, and spring swaps if shimming wasn't enough...
and oil weight changes for damping adjustments. And brazing closed holes where oil passes, and drilling new holes...
For the seriously demented..:laughing

You're right, that was a bit heavy on the hyperbole and since this thread was started by someone genuinely interested in buying one, I'll clarify. That 02 or 03 I had was fine for 90% of my riding; commuting, long distance, round town, it was fine. When the road got tighter and chunkier, the rear wouldn't settle as quickly as I'd like, somewhere between a pogo stick and wallowing. But again, that was really only on the nasty twisties. The other 919 I had had rebound, which the 04 will too, and the difference was pretty remarkable.

And you're right about the engine, reworked 900rr and bullet proof.

WackyIraqi has a 919 with something over 100,000 miles on it now. Truly bulletproof engine.

And yes, though it's definitely lo-budget suspension, the '04 and later models have adjustable front suspension. No linkage for the shock for any of the years, 2002-2007, though.

Larger displacement and same type means they think you'll crash more.

On the other hand, it turns out I'm pretty cheap to insure now. $260/year for liability + comprehensive ($500 deductible) for my SV1000 and WR450.

Thanks for all the input, bought it a month or so ago; rising every day; it's been AMAZING- smooth, solid, suspension sweet, and yes, after the gs500, fAsT when it needs to be.
