Are you trying to pass the DMV test? If so, I'm looking for a DMV that's got those road test patterns drawn and want to try it. Do you know where?

If I remember correctly the DMV in Fremont has it. Is right across the street from Fremont cycle salvage.

i'm down for this....i love to practice cones and slow speed patterns....call it a character defect.

i also know of two parking lots in santa clara where we can practice, one with lines already painted. i've practiced in both lots so i know they're ok.

add me to your PM list.

I'm scareoused!
How about we meet up at the Rivermark Pete's coffee, Sunday March 2nd at around 2:00pm? We can figure out where to go from there. If anyone needs to contact me the that day, PM and ask for my cellphone #.

My parking lot is a workable option, but I'm not sure it's ideal. I'd be interested in ex911's suggestions.

Great idea, but I'd want more than other newbs to practice with, so you don't all reinforce and ingrain some bad habits, like looking down instead of up and around while turning, etc.

(I'd stay away from glass bottles as cones, too! :hand)

Bob (ex911) would be a great coach, have fun with it! :thumbup

I could use tons of practice, but have plans already.

about 6 people PM me that they want to join...
i got one offer so far by an experienced rider to help us with this and it looks like Bob is also down to help us...
the only thing left is choosing a location that works best for everyone...
for now I'll give this a little bit more time to see who else is interested in doing this. I'll wrap up the number of people this saturday and inform everyone on the choices of places and times...then we can decide what is best...
I can't do it on weekdays because i have lab just about everyday and by the time I'm done, it's dark outside...
weekends work best...

sounds like too many hot dogs and not enough buns...

i hate it that I tried too hard to make time for it and got kicked out every single time...

and of course, no desperado picked up on this...I wonder how many times did you get 'kicked out' of the MSF class?

you guys will look hilarious tripping over each other for this one... :laughing

From personal experience (where are ya Curt :p) I'd recommend keeping the number of participant small. Like limiting it to the 6 you already have.

The last time we tried this on an open forum we had like 20+ people, and it made a very visible crowd which then got the security guards all excited and they chased us out of the lot.

Keeping it to 6 or less and we could've just quietly done our practice instead of having 20 bikes run around cones and waiting in line. Those of you who've done MSF can imagine a range day twice as large as the one you had!

You can accommodate the late sign-ups at the next practice day. For example, sign-ups 1 - 6 go with you this time, sign-ups 7 - 12 go with you next time, etc. Reward the early people that way. How does that go now? The early birds get the cone practice! :p

I'll go and have a look, but I'm really looking for the DMV test pattern. I took MSF so didn't try the DMV road test, but I keep hearing that it is hard so I just want to see. Somebody suggested checking out hte DMV in Santa Clara so I'll go there.

Yeah, definitely don't go to highway 9 if you don't feel ready. Wait a few months, ride the streets a bit and get to know your bike.

Good luck finding a parking lot partner.

there is a DMV on the corner of showers and latham in mt. view. it's a commercial services center only now, but used to be the full dealio. i haven't been by in ages but i bet the motorcycle test pattern is still there.

yeah, I was thinking that 6 should be enough. small group is better...

but I'll wrap up tonight the number of people and start working on the place.
if later more people want to join...well I guess they have to PM the instructors for that then...

Late to the thread, but my advice to the OP is to nix the group and find one or two experienced riders to help you alone.

Turning in a tight circle is NOT difficult. People psyche themselves out because they think it's so hard. Putting a group of people together and the pressure of an audience is not the best idea IMO. You'll also wind up sitting around watching others more than actually riding.

Two instructors and four students is a pretty good ratio...

But I do agree with keeping the attendee list short.

I tipped my bike over one time...It was like a month ago and i think it was because of the pressure of the audience...I was heading home and my friend caught me on the bike about to take off (i rarely ever told anyone that i ride a bike...because i suck at it...so i was nervous b/c they really wanted to see how i took off...put a bad show there!)
not sure how this will work, but i did thought of that and don't know if having people waiting with all eyes on me will help, or just make it worse by making me nervous...but I don't want to do it all by myself either because this is the whole point of getting help.

I know other newbies want to practice on this as well..
I say the list is done and closed...so by far we have 5-6...
just gonna do either one on one, two on two or max will be two sections of 2:3
PM me if anyone feel like he(she?) really needs help from an instructor...maybe the rest who feel more comfortable can just practice together?

I would suggest using the Mission college parking lot, If weather is good they usually are done (MSF course) by 3PM anyway.

i can follow on my bike just fine on normal streets/freeway...what I mean is taking my bike to practice, dragging knee and such at the practice...
not sure if I trust myself on that...I ride everyday but just to school and not doing much turning and leaning at all...that's one of the things that really bugs me...don't seem like getting any better because I'm not doing anything different.

The Zoom Zoom RoadRiding 2.0 course is done in the parking lot for the most part. Check out the link. It is supposed to help you in everyday life while riding.

This is from the Website....
• Walking you through a quick bike inspection of your own bike,
• Working with you on some useful maneuvers like tight circles, collision avoidance and emergency braking,
• Focusing on correct vision techniques during all of the exercises,
• Giving you practical instruction on group riding where we use the track as a simulated 2-lane road,
• Working on more advanced skills such as cornering, street lines, and track lines,
• Both classroom time and practical experience where all exercises are done on your own bike.

When I was first starting out, I went to a DMV parking lot early Sunday mornings to practice. There are a bunch of things you can practice besides u-turns. There were lots of landscaping islands at this DMV lot. Consider each row like a city street, and you can practice your stop and goes and turns just as if you were riding around town, all in a compressed distance.

You mentioned having trouble stating out cleanly. So here, you can stop and go at the end of each parking row. It's great stuff as you practice from a dead stop how to smoothly start right into a hard right turn. Sounds stupid, but I have to admit I was initially scared of the hard turn pulling out of my driveway.
