If you ever wanted a Google TV add-on for your TV, the price was just lowered to $99, yesterday. It's worth it just for the keyboard. : nerd

tnx. maybe I shold jump on the backorder. Been wondering whether my TV should get networked for a while.

As of yesterday, Tigerdirect.com still had some. They are selling them through the new and improved CompUSA brick and mortar stores. Mine will be delivered on the 22nd by Amazon.

2nd Gen AppleTV refurb is $85. :D

Do you get a full browser on your TV with that Apple device? Nope. :laughing

Keyboard? Nope. :laughing

Can you stream all video formats you want and not just Mpeg-4? Nope. :laughing

Can you plug USB drives with all sorts of media? Nope, it doesn't even have a USB port. :laughing

So how does this thing work?

It's Google TV.

You plug your satellite or cable receiver into it, then to your HDMI port on your TV. It connects to your network either with WiFi or Ethernet cable. Originally you was supposed to be able to use it without a receiver and could stream a shitload of channels for free, but all the networks bailed on Google. But you can do Hulu, Netflix, and all that jazz. You can hit a button on the wireless keyboard that also has a touchpad, then have a a full browser on your TV which includes flash. Your TV is open in a window.

You can search for shows or actors and it will pull up the info from the net plus find the shows on your receivers and either tune them in or schedule them automatically on your DVR. It will also control your receivers. You can plug USB drives directly into the unit that has your movies, or it can stream them from your PC.

It runs Android 2.2, but later this month it will run Android 3.1 to fx all the issues it had and you can install a bunch of Apps on it. It also works as a Harmony Universal remote.

It was selling for $300, but since it really wasn't worth that kind of money, they just lowered the price to $99.

Here's the website that has all the details.

Fear me!
Back when GTV first came out I was very interested until I found that you could not hook up a decent sized external drive to it and play local files easily. Is this still the case? The google brings up old posts/questions, not sure if the new software has fixed this up any. Boxee still seems like THE device to get for playing local media files on your TV.
I'm getting neither though and will probably buy the XBOX+Kinect for Christmas...for the kids of course :laughing.

As of 12/2010 it now supports drives up to 2TB when formatted for NTFS.

Before that it was 895Gb and only FAT.

The device has two USB ports but you can only have one external drive connected.

You can...hack it.

iOS5 will enable the Bluetooth within to let you use a keyboard

Get over it. :rolleyes

And when an AppleTV software update rolls out, the hacked AppleTV unit will work 100% without any tweaking, etc?

As per Apple SOP, none of their devices will perform any task that is standard practice by any other vendor. I would post 50% more for a product just so I wouldn't have to hack out, plus worry when I do an update that all my hacking was in vain.

I was just naming all the cool features the device had and didn't have any intention to say anything bad about Apple TV until you got a wild hair about it for whatever reason.:rolleyes
