Do yourself a favor and buy a proper gym model. Make room for it. The best home version still falls well short of the lowest end gym model. In California there are many places selling refurbs for good prices. Expect to pay $1,000 average. Lifestride/Lifecycle brand sells for the highest and Precor or Unisen/StarTrac can be just as good but bought cheaper.
Many gyms surely have gone out of business and are liquidating right now. A deal can be had if you don’t feel a bit vulturesque.

Well the thing is the big
Machines make a lot of noise and I’m on the top floor apartment :laughing
I don’t want any crying neighbors at my door

That’s why I’m thinking portable she can bring it out and use it outside the front door lol it’s not about the money

Then you need an elliptical. No matter what type of treadmill you get, there will always be the incessant pounding of feet hitting the treadmill deck.
An elliptical is by far the most apartment friendly cardio stuff. A bike would be even quieter but I seem to be the only one who likes riding stationary bikes. There is that new Peleton craze though.

I don't know why a commercial model treadmill would be louder though. Better bearings, higher quality DC motor, etc.
I have seen Precor club model ellipticals for $600 on ebay and craigslist.

I have a shitty elliptical/recumbent bike hybrid which I just barely was able to get just before the lockdown sales craze and subsequent drought in fitness equipment. It has a HUGE footprint and is just adequate. It's the ProForm hybrid. A POS really but am happy to have it. Holding up so far even though it gets 45 minutes use every day and for six months it was getting up to 2.5 hours use every day.

I have never seen a home treadmill that was worth what they were selling them for.

Good luck in your quest.

for relatively quiet cardio, a rower is more bang/buck IMO. lower and upper body and the really nice gym models lean straight up for storage... maybe check ceiling height first so it'll stand all the way up.

I picked up a Proform CBC spin bike at Costco for $389. Obviously not as nice as a Peloton or Norditrack, but price was great and came with a 1 year iFit family membership. Footprint is small and bike is quiet. I had a 10" tablet sitting around, so it was a no brainer. Very happy with purchase so far. Proform line is just a from the same company that produces NordicTrack equipment.

The Norditrack spin bikes have an incline feature, its the only spin bikes that have that treadmill feature. They had a promo running last month, 3years iFit Family membership and any Norditrack equipment for a monthly payment around $40-50, depending on equipment.

The Concept2 rower is awesome and new ones are about a grand. They seem super noisy to me though and many casual fitness folks find them too intense.
I firmly agree they are a great product. My wife wanted one of those "washing machine" rowers but the noise drove me nuts in 5 minutes. The Concept2 definitely packs away nicely.

i've used concept 2 quite a bit, the fan noise is certainly there. compared to the pounding of a treadmill though?

i might be a bit biased, i hate running especially if i'm going nowhere

That’s true I could never understand why people have big ass treadmills in their living rooms when there’s a park across the street,

Things I didn't realize were a thing when buying one... weight limits...

Yes, it matters to people in my weight class.

We got one barely used for 200 bucks. Still had the stickers on plastic wrap in it from the years in the garage where it sat.

Works like a charm.

Bad weather and limited daylight can influence a persons decision here. We are pretty spoiled in the bay area but if you don't like to run at night and your work schedule makes it difficult to do outdoor activities in the daylight, indoor equipment makes sense. That said, i prefer to exercise outside as much as possible too.

yeah, is there a park nearby where you could possibly walk or run and enjoy the view? there are closed streets in the park...

...i guess this is moot after "12 hours in the hospital". perhaps people should not allow 12 hour shifts?

do you think this would really work, that they would just get the hint "no problem"? let us know..

I know a few women that aren't comfortable running outside at certain times or at certain places. People (men) can be assholes to women. Treadmills can solve that problem.
