Leon Panetta CIA chief?!?

This is the kind of non understanding of national security infrastructure that worries me about Obama...

From the huffingtonpost.com

I think you're underestimating Panetta. He is one of the most intelligent and well spoken representatives we've ever sent to DC. And while the conservatives on BARF won't see it as a feather in his cap, he served 3-4 years as Clinton's Chief of Staff. So he was probably quite familiar with the blackest of CIA Operations during and before his time in the Clinton Administration. Also note that historically speaking, having extensive intelligence service experience does not guarantee a good CIA Director. And conversely, having no experience in intelligence service does not mean you will be a bad CIA Director (or FBI, for that matter).

Panetta is pretty badass. at very least he wont fuckup the CIA more than it is. That said, im slightly conservative. Just read back on my posts.

It also demonstrates his lack of understanding of wielding executive power.

He apparently didn't consult with Dianne Feinstein, the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, a member of his own party, no less.

She looks pissed. Not a good move, and a neat illustration on why some are terrified to have such a rank amateur in the top job.

Quoted from an LA Times article:

"I was not informed about the selection of Leon Panetta to be the CIA director," Feinstein said. "My position has consistently been that I believe the agency is best served by having an intelligence professional in charge at this time."

It does seem to make sense having someone with some direct intelligence experience in that seat. I don't see this as a lib/conservative issue but as a what's best for the County issue. There are times when experience counts and I would think the CIA is one of them.

Obama didn't want anyone in the post who had been involved in Bush Admin policy making. That thins the field quite a bit.

As for whether Feinstein likes it, I truly couldn't care less.

You've missed the point.

It has nothing to do with DiFi's personal feelings, or Panetta's (lack of) qualifications.

Not at least going through the motions of clearing the appointment by the chairman of the committee in charge of the agency was a boneheaded, rookie move.

Actually, the current director has been credited with restoring a lot of the moral in the CIA and is considered to have done a good job since taking over in 2006. Remember, the CIA was a shit hole not too long ago, as the whole security community was revamped under Bush causing lot's of confusion and frustration.

Rolls with it...
One of his son's just received a medal last month for his reserve service in Afghanistan:

Panetta's son to receive Bronze Star

Navy Reserve Lt. James Panetta of Oakland, son of Leon and Sylvia Panetta of Carmel Valley, will be decorated with the Bronze Star Medal at 2p.m. Tuesday by Naval Postgraduate School President and retired Navy Vice Adm. Dan Oliver at the school in Monterey.

Panetta, a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, was called up for active duty from July 2007 to July 2008 and assigned to a joint special operations task force based at Fort Bragg, N.C.

He deployed for six months to Bagram, Afghanistan, providing intelligence for special operations forces in an attempt to identify and locate high-level al-Qaida targets.

Her intel qualifications are barely better than Panetta's. Neither of them have real world experience. Obama is looking at management qualifications rather than intel experience and is looking for someone who doesn't have Bush's stink on them.

You can say it was a rookie move if Panetta fails to be confirmed.

It has been said that everyone in Obama's cabinet is over-qualified for the job he has assigned them, including Panetta. It's the way he wants it.
