Kitchen Knife set?

Smile & Wave for me!
So I need a new set as mine were getting rust spots on them. My kids got me a Yatoshi set for Christmas but they don't have steak knives with them. Looking for a good set of steak knives, do you recommend any?

Whatever that means
I wouldn't go too nuts on steak knifes, they are used by guests a lot, not sharpened and abused most.

I got a set of the cutco ones to help out a kid trying to pay their way through college. They are alright. I would have also been fine with most any mid grade serrated small knife set.

Jero makes really good knifes for a cheap price.

Yep, just grab a mid grade set of serrated knives. You'll want to throw them in the dishwasher.

Really have been impressed with a sharper image set I got from Ross...

No really, they are still sharp and kept their black coloring after years.

Thanks guys, I will check out Ross and the Juro kife on amazon. I am just looking for a long-lasting set that will not rust on me.

Off topic, everyone needs a decent Japanese Chef's knife.

Fantastic.

Just don't use them on bone.

I also have the Cutco serrated steak knives and they are decent but I'm sure you can get as good for less.

Before I bought the Cutco serrated knifes I actually preferred to use a paring knife, they cleaned a lot easier and as long as they are sharp they do the job just fine. Serrated knifes can tear the meat instead of cutting it sometimes. They use serrated knifes mostly because they are more durable as the "blade" is protected form a lot of wear.

+1 on the paring knife but not the long one with the thin blade. we have one that's stumpy and the blade is quite rigid. if i were in prison and needed to shank someone it's what i'd try to make. i think it's this one

Downside to those is the handle is slippy if you fingers get greasy and also those would probably be a pita to clean.

Toss em into the dishwasher. I agree they could get slippery but I aint using them to carve on a carcass for hours on end. I think the waifu complained about our lack of steak knives once in earshot of my parents...and...poof...Santa brings us a set. Now if I could just get her to complain about not having a new GS. :laughing

P.S. They will open a bottle, no prob, bro. :toothless:twofinger

I'd get a good chef's knife that fits your hand and you like the feel of, a very very good bread knife, a paring knife, and maybe a slicing knife. You don't need too many kinds in my opinion.

Thought I do have too many myself now lol

Ugh I HATE serrated steak knives. I put effort into cooking my steaks perfectly and the last thing I want is my knife chewing it up before I do. Do yourself a favor and get straight bladed steak knives. We have a Wusthof set that we got for a wedding gift and they've been great.

I did buy a set of forged Henkels 20+ years ago that took as long to utilize on a regular basis. If you're already pretty serious home cook sets can be good. But it's better to piecemeal it together. Here's a good guide:

And this knife is lauded but not nearly enough. It's simply awesome for the $$.

+1 on the stubby paring version. With good knive hygiene and professional tuneups as needed, most full tang modern knives are more than up for whatever you throw at them.
