Kids these days...

Wanted to share something I experienced on Halloween. My wife and I took our daughter to my parents' house in Oakley for her first trick or treating experience. Their neighborhood always seems to have more houses participating than ours and generally feels a bit safer. Trick or treating went really well, but it's what happened when we went to leave that was...unfortunate.

As we were in the driveway saying our goodbyes and getting in the car, we saw two cars fly down the street well over the posted 25mph. My parents live on a very straight and long road so this happens a lot. Except a few seconds later, both cars fly back down going the opposite direction...then turn around and come back down a third time. This time, both cars stop across from a house about 4 houses down from us. A guy gets out of the car (looks to be a teenager) and does something to a parked VW station wagon, then jumps back in the car and they take off. At first I thought he had egged it since I heard sounds of hard impacts, but I wasn't entirely sure. I felt compelled to walk down and look...and when I got there I saw they'd broken all three side windows of the car.

I went up to the door and after knocking a few times (they probably thought I was a pesky trick or treater not paying attention to their darkened porch lights) I informed the owner of what happened and offered my witness statement since I got a very good look at the cars and knew color, make and model. The owner had no idea who would have an issue with him that would be connected to those particular cars. I still feel like it was a targeted act based on them seemingly searching for their house and car.

But damn...if it was in fact random, is that what constitutes a Halloween prank these days? Whatever happened to eggs and TP? :mad

Are you saying kids haven't been doing terrible shit for thousands of years?

The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.

Rolls with it...
The vandalism aspect sucks, but on the bright side, the kids that did it will probably post it on YouTube making it easier to find them....

Not quite, I just feel like when I was that age it would never occur to us to actually permanently damage someone's car like that. Even if someone specifically pissed me off I can't imagine I would have gone so far as to break their windows.

In my youth ( a few decades ago ) the choice of tools for vandalism were eggs, toilet paper, shaving cream, stink bombs and/or shipping popcorn. Good times.

I live on the main artery into my housing development. It's posted 25mph.

I have had:
The driver's side window on my truck smashed.
The driver's side mirror smashed.
Egged cars.

Always on Halloween.

And I've witnessed some tuners videotaping their awesome machine racing up and down my street. This is the only one where I've actually caught someone doing something so I went out talk with the videographer:
Me: Hey, how's it going...what'cha doin?
VG: Videotaping my friend's car.
Me: Wow, that's the third time I've heard him race down the street. Would you guys mind doing that somewhere else?
VG: o_O???
Me: Seriously, if he loses control and crashes you guys are going to be in trouble.
VG: Okay.

And they left.

I've never caught anyone who's damaged my truck. The year the window got smashed there were at least another 5 cars/trucks along the road that had the same thing done to them. Looked like someone went by in a vehicle and hit all the cars/trucks on the street for a quarter mile stretch (not many people park on the street in my neighborhood).

egg damage to your paint job might be more expensive than replacing 3 windows

If you want to damage paint toss some bologna slices onto the hot surface during a hot day. I heard it really fooks it up.

But on the bright side, at least they didn't shoot into the house. yea!

In the 1920's and 30's, youth terrorizing the Country on Halloween was so severe, that they intentionally invented Trick or Treat as a bribe routine to stop the madness.

When I was a teenager, every 6 months or so someone around my age would be kicked to death in a random attack on the street by other people around my age. So, yeah. Kids are shits, some anyway, but no more now than before. :dunno
