Just bought a toy hauler. What else do I need?

Wifey and I just bought our first trailer. Our plan is to use it for track/race weekends and camping trips. I bought it from a buddy so it came with some stuff like mattresses, jack blocks, batteries, but he’s keeping a lot of stuff since he’s buying an RV.

This is our list of stuff to buy so far:

50ft of sewer hose
100ft of clean water hose
100ft of misc water hose
Sewer dump wrench
Small vacuum
Broom
Scissor jack socket
Mechanic’s tool kit
50 amp surge protector
50 amp to 30 amp converter
Gas grill/griddle
Kitchen stuff (plates, utensils, drying rack, cutting board, etc...)
Hanging closet organizer
Large outdoor mat
Bath towels, toiletries, etc...

It’s a 40ft 5th wheel, so storage space is not an issue and I’d like to basically have it always packed and ready to go instead of having to drag stuff from home along with us.

Can anyone think of anything else we might need? This is our first venture into the trailer camping world, so other than reading a few online articles about equipment, I’m clueless.

Camp Chairs
Folding Table
Ez-Up(s)
Firepit Grill (Folding, stands over fire for cooking)
Shovel (folding)
Hatchet
Machete
Clothesline
Sisal twine
Light Rope (200ft)
Heavy Rope (50ft)
Come-along (If the trailer gets stuck over several days parked, having the ability to hitch up and pull it out is nice.)
Trash Bags! (Huge, heavy gauge, big 'uns are recommended.)
Tow Strap/Tree Straps
Ground Anchor if you're feeling froggy
Cat litter (I keep a bucket of cheap stuff around for spills of any kind, cat litter, mix, scoop into bag, dispose of in solid waste bin)
Trailer tire changing ramp

2 spares minimum (if you run something over you frequently lose both tires on the same side.)

Could keep going, this is just stuff I've found handy.

40' is a huge trailer = over 50' total rig length.
This means you will be limited in a lot of non-commercial campgrounds. National parks and national forest campgrounds are typically limited to about 30'.

You need practice towing it around town and on the freeway.

I have never needed a 50' sewer hose and it would be a royal PITA and a mess to try to use one. Most dump stations and camp sites you need about 10'. I think the 10' is the standard size. I have 2 plus a coupler and I have never used the second hose.

Fresh water hose I have is 25' and have never needed anything longer.

Check tire age. Trailer tires rot out at about 6 years, well before they wear out.

I have a large piece of outdoor carpet I bought at lowes. Works great

Do not store fuel inside the trailer or everything will smell and taste like fuel. Don't store it in the trailer even on the way to the track. Put fuel in the back of the truck.

That's all good stuff. Thanks!

I've borrowed and towed this trailer before, so I'm familiar with driving it.

I knew I'd be limited in camping locations, but didn't know that National Parks or National Forrest were limited to 30ft. That's good to know. Thanks!

I have a sewer clean out in my front yard and I've dumped there when I've used the trailer in the past. It's been about a year since I've used it, and I want to say that 20ft was barely enough. 50ft is probably too much on second thought.

I think I typo'd the fresh water hose. I have 50ft written down on my list, not 100ft. We were going to do 50ft freshwater and then a 100ft Flexi hose for misc water stuff.

Tires are new and he just had the roof redone last month! :thumbup

Fuel always goes in the bed of the truck!

Thanks for the tips! Keep 'em coming!

Maybe something like this about 10' tall on each side and another on the ceiling above the bed?

more toys, duh!
you can take all the toys out of the garage how because you now have a portable garage to put them in . so, the regular garage will now be empty and lonely so yea definitely need more toys

Are you going to run the AC while boon docking?
All the above are interrelated due to how much power you start with(30/50 amp), how much you need, and the location, what is available.

Your lengths on water, power cord (not mentioned) usually around 20 to 30' Sewer I have 10' & 20' & can couple it. The only 100' thing I have is two 50' tv cables for satellite.
I also have a dump tank, to move grey/black when a hose is too short.

The gas/electric fridges suck. If it's just a weekend toy probably just rock it until it stops working well enough for your liking. I replaced mine with a standard residential unit and was much happier with the cooling and usable space (the gas lines behind the fridge take up a lot of depth).

A real mattress, probably have to expand your beds base a bit since the dimensions are different.

That foil crap for the windows

Don't get too excited, they're all built like shit and a lot of stuff is going to break :laughing

Some sick programmable LED rope lights to go around your awning. Might as well light up underneath while you’re at it.

A place to park it? :confused

:laughing

See.... now if I knew you and we were friends, I would say something like:

“Your mom is gonna let me park it in the back. She said the trailer can go in her side yard too...”

But..........

We’ve never met, so I’ll say “I’ve already got trailer storage lined up. :thumbup”

:laughing

This is the grill you want.

Folds up, you can store it, uses the little campfire propane AND you can use a big bottle if you want, but you won't need it. The small bottles last 2-3 hours.

I use mine almost every weekend. They fucking kick ass.
