Joker movie (spoilers)

Just saw it last night. It was...interesting.

Fairly slow throughout imo. Subtle hints on things not quite right in his head (duh). Took me a minute to think about how to differentiate between the imagined realities vs the real realities.

IMO one of the key indicators is when he laughs. Notice that when he's imagining things, he's not suffering from the uncontrollable laughter.

Another (possibly?) is that the scenes are usually brighter, the director using lighting as an indicator. Sort of like how in The Departed every time there was an X somewhere on screen, someone was about to die.

Overall I thought it was decent, but still mulling it over in my mind.

I certainly thought it was a good picture. It painted a nice picture of mental illness, and the Gotham that they painted reminded me of being back east when I was young.

the joker has always been among my least favorite fictional characters. more of a physical manifestation of mental illness than anything else of substance. a creepy caricature that i do not find the slightest bit entertaining in any of its various incarnations. am positive this one will fit the same bill. zero interest. i will take a pass.

Your description of the Joker absolutely NAILS this movie. It is about mental illness. It shows his decline, from a 'nice', but sick man, to a sadistic individual. It shows how budget cuts- to social safety nets, could allow his sickness to get out of control. His mistreatment by society was just one of thew many components which lead to him becoming the Joker.

I'm sure this movie will be shown in Social Studies classes as an example of what happens to society when the mentally ill are neglected.

Saw it today, and it is an excellent film. It is a testament to the lead actor's skill, that numerous scenes of him just laughing or dancing, usually in his underwear, were compelling, and added to the movie/plot. It reminded me of Requiem for a Dream, which was another great movie that dealt with mental illness, and a character's relationship with a tv show.

Wasn’t the joker supposed to represent capitalism and how it made all people inherently evil and misguided?

Did this film draw parallel to that?

He was always about corrupting the banks and cared nothing about money.

I thought Joaquin did a fantastic job with this role. It was much slower than I anticipated but all in all, I really enjoyed it.

I will admit, the whole time I was left wishing Heath Ledger was still around to perform this instead. Though Joaquin did great, I thing Heath would have been brilliant!

No, he is not. He was inspired by a character in L'Homme Qui Rit by Victor Hugo. Privilege and Power were certainly essential to the class struggle so apparent in all of Hugo's work (that I know of), but it is mainly a romantic tragedy.

IMO one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Glad I didn't pay for it. Depressing movie.....don't go

The movie was fantastic, best movie of the year although it has been shallow this year once again.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, it has me hooked. That was my kind of comic book movie, a more serious tone

be that as it may, like i said, i am not entertained by the subject - not my idea of fun, and i do not need a movie to stimulate my thoughts on the subject (have very ample dark family episodes that don’t require reinforcement).

that said - am sure there are many who identify with the character who do not actually suffer from mental illness, but feel similarly marginalized, and may be emboldened by a character who holds society at large responsible for their own actions. it’s your fault - not mine (a flaw in the mental illness nature of the joker character - most who suffer from true mental illness are incapable of such calculation - they just act without serious understanding of why). which is a deeply disturbed twist on the intent. or maybe that is the intent. unknown. in any event, there is no upside to putting it up on the big screen as far as i’m concerned. it’s a bold faced threat. without any consideration for anything anyone has ever done to try and help those afflicted, however insufficient that may be or have been (government actions aside).

It is an excellent film for anyone who wants to validate how truly awful humans are, which is always a great thing to remind folks. Some people still put faith in humanity, which should always be checked with art, because these people who do, they have not yet been moved by the overwhelming statistical and historical evidence.

I enjoyed the movie. Could relate to some of his frustrations (minus the the extreme violence). People will be talking about this joker for years.

If people don’t plan on seeing this movie why are they here? No one cares.

It looks like it is going to be the largest grossing R rated film of all time.

I saw it as more of an interesting angle, that happens to depict a story from an outsider's view.
