It's happening, I am building a Monster!

This Ducati came to be here, in our shop, in my possession because of connections.

A brief history of THIS Monster:

11718032435_109e68a6dd_b.jpg

It is a 2001 M900sie
It formerly belonged to carries an axe who was in the process of turning it into one sexy monoposto dressed in carbon fiber.
It was run over by a stop sign running SUV.

Adam, carries an axe, gained BARF notoriety in 2011 with an amazing perspective from one laying prone in a hospital bed.

Due to the excruciatingly slowness of litigation, Adam needed a free place to keep his motorcycle. We provided the place.

Greener borrowed Pelon's big diesel truck and dropped the Ducati to our place in Marin.

The day that KHAN was leaving San Francisco to begin his epic journey, I was having a small BBQ in honor of the Ducati getting pickled and going into deep storage.

In attendance were Adam, F4ichik, Dr,Evil, Rapid Robbie, and Robbies's brand new love Gina.

Robbie pickled the engine, drained the fuel, removed the battery and prepped the Monster for a long time away.

We then hoisted the bike onto the top outside rack and didn't think about it.

Last year we brought the bike down and prepared for the build but Robbie died.

Aww man.. wouldn't it be cool to put a hack on this bike so Adam could ride again? There's a shop in Washington state that make side hacks.

I'm not sure how mobile you are Adam but I had a hack for years their hella fun. I used to fly the chair with my wife in it she loved it and won't ride with me unless I get another one. I'm seriously thinking about putting one on the RT.

Food for thought anyway, I wanted to plant the seed.

Back up in the racks it went until a few weeks ago when I felt it was a good time to start digging into it for a winter project.

So, here is what we are starting with. This build may drag out as money and time are short, that's why I linked everyone to some great reading material :laughing

typical tank dings

scratched fork housing

The left side of the bike is lightly damaged

the right side bore the brunt. The slider tour the frame at the engine mount. We haven't checked to see if teh case is cracked or not but by feel it seem ok.

I've read Adam's thread before and it's immensely eye opening. We should start linking that thread in every "new rider/what bike should I buy" thread. It's amazingly sobering and showcases the dangers of riding a motorcycle.

Glad to see this bike coming back to life and looking forward to the thread as it progresses.

I hate you so much! I want that bike so bad. Everytime Adam posted I drooled over that bike.

Now I understand how that slider tour the frame.
This picture is exactly what I imagined from the damages.

yup, in hindsight those lsl sliders don't seem to protect the bike very well.
they looked sexy though.:teeth

I think they did the job.

As soon as we get the bike on the big rack I'll have you come over and look at it. Although the frame did tear, I think we would be looking at a lot more damage without them. They are sexy as all get out and will go back on :thumbup

I need to load the handlebar pictures because they are what really impressed me. Bendy!

They appear [t]=o be a bit tweaked, I'm concerned about relieving any stress on the engine mounting, without having a method in place to keep everything tensioned.

Taze away, Yana...
This looks like it's gunna be fun! I'll take a look in my giant box o' Ducati parts to see what I have that will help.

When you get to it, make sure the weld on that tank is strong at the rear mounting point; I recommend welding it again to be safe. They are notorious for cracking during regular riding, much less a crash... They leak gas directly onto the hot header under it... Big fires, but oddly never a recall.

After you replace the seals on the fork, and oil them back up, you can just turn the fork 180 to hide the damage behind the mudguard; assuming it is still straight, and holds a seal that is.

As for the frame, that is a very common issue with frame sliders on this bike. The case, and the frame normally survive it, just the bolt, and that tab suffer. No big deal, and can be left bent up, or ground off, and weld a new ring on if you hate the way it looks.

I'll let you know Saturday evening as per what I have for your project.

Gwynne, as soon as Kelly and I are back up there, I'd absolutely love to get involved on this in any way that I can. I've gotten pretty good at scrounging up Monster parts from all over the nether worlds of the net. :teeth

Useful idiot
The saga continues. I'm available if you need a hand wrenching, a chuckle, some lunch, a cold beer, a big squishy hug, or anything else useful. :thumbup
