The time is right. Shelter in place means we have the time. My wife and I work from home and can devote the time needed. The SIP is taking it's toll on the kid, and she wants / should be given the blessing of a dog.

We're 100% committed to a Malinois and that makes it a more difficult. Rescue's will not entertain allowing us to adopt one. They require prior experience with the breed, and / or prior large dog experience, previous or current dog in the household. I understand their concerns, but still plan on adopting a malinois.

We have the time. We have the drive and personality to support the needs of the breed. The family also understands the needs of the breed and are onboard. I have a very large yard. My brother and sister in-law are veterinarians (free care!). I don't need a purebred dog with papers. We would like a puppy but would consider other options. The younger the better. We want the full experience.

What's BARF got to say? Can you help us locate a malinois puppy?

Cool... a puppy will be loved and be a great diversion for you all.

Good luck.

Let me put an ask out for you.

How far of a drive you willing to do?

Thank you.

I don’t really have a limit. I wouldn’t blink at a thousand. Farther than that would require additional planning but not a deal breaker.

I saw a dog (not your breed, just a mutt) this weekend playing/drinking with the water coming out of a sprinkler this weekend. It was pretty cute to watch. Made me want to get one! Have fun with your new soon-to-be pup.

Good luck finding the dog that works for you. I love labs, but my wife always wanted a dalmation. She found a papered pup that had a hernia and they still wanted $250 !!. I called said I did not needed the AKC and would give then $50 and take care of the vet bill. They took my offer. Great dog for 14 years and high maintenance, at least I had a big yard. Rescues can be hard to work with. My daughter wanted a dalmation years later and found one at a Rescue. They did interviews, and after my daughter showed pictures of our/hers dalmation when she was in her teens she did get the dog. He was another good dog for 13 years.

Thank you.

Sounds good. She's gonna ask around.

TBH, if it was anyone other then you, I would agree with the breeder ;)

I have owned a fleet of border collies so understand where this is coming from - are you aware of the amount of exercise and mental stimulation a malinois needs? I don't know what your lifestyle is like but make sure you're aware of the commitment.

Every single rescue organization told us no dice since we had kids. It was the most frustrating experience ever.

Interesting. This is the first I’ve heard of this. What breed were you looking for?

Medium sized dog, we weren't particular on the breed but every organization we talked to insisted on no kids. A dog for the boys to play with, walk, and have responsibilities was why we wanted a dog.

We ended up getting a 6 month old beagle off of Craigslist and he is perfect. He was a little rowdy at first but all he needed was some positive training.

Thanks. I’ll take that as a compliment.

My first experience with a malinois was in the Marines while on guard duty. I had a dog and handler on my team. After a few weeks of daily interaction the dog began to respond to me when we were ‘working’. The handler mentioned that that was the first time he’d seen his dog interact with anyone but him. The dog appeared excited to see me and would play with me. We decided to take it farther and see if the dog would respond to my commands. Both of us were pretty shocked that it did. The rest of my guards decided to do the same and the dog wasn’t having any of it.

Then one day I joked with the handler that the dog may be shifting some loyalty to me. Later that day I was playing catch and tug of war with the dog the handler uttered a command and like a light switch the dog immediately treated me like an enemy. I wasn’t bitten, but it was clear that I wasn’t supposed to move from my current position. The command I gave were ignored.

The handler slowly walked over and said “What was that you said about loyalty?”

Point taken. Message received.

The dog still liked playing with me though.

I worked at Pt Loma from 2004ish - 2008ish. It's the Navy working dog command center. I had lots of interactions with them there and we would bring them out on small boat VBSS.

I went to a training scenario with a a shipmate, 6'6" 300#s. He suited up and walked about 25 yards away. Glove out and leaned out. 60ish # dog flipped him on ass all 3 times. Gave me a lot of respect for the breed.

My sister in law is obsessed with them and she works in the industry, has a lot of connections. She has a mixed 1, rescue. They lived with me for about 2-3 years.

They need to be worked. They do not do well with mixed messages. Make sure everyone is onboard with the law of the land. (Nothing you don't know)

She has an ask out, both here and in Southern Washington, for available. A lot of time litters are sold in advance so you may be in for a little wait. If she finds one, I assume you'll be open and available for zoom interviews ;)

has to be a puppy?

Not really a dog you want to be bringing on someone else's training problems... It took a good year of hard work correcting my SiLs.

It wouldn't hurt to reach out to Pete's suggestion either. Danni has connections in the world as well.
