Is there any positive reasons to keep CA plates on my vehicles?

I currently live in Florida with CA plates. Registration is due for one of my cars and CA is asking me to pay about $200. I am debating if I should keep my CA plates or switch to FL. Because of my military status, FL is waiving their one time initial registration fee of $225, however, they will still charge me $98 for the transfer of title fee and another $28 for the actual FL plates. The normal reg fee is only $46.50! So total I'd have to pay $172.50 which is still less than the $200 that CA is charging me.

Now, the subsequent years of renewal will only cost me $46.50! This is totally worth it, but my question is, is there a reason to keep the CA plates other than pride in my home state? :twofinger

No and its probably illegal

Nope. Active military can keep whatever plate they want indefinitely as long as they're still on active status.

EDIT: Each state is different, but most if not all have some type of exemption from having to switch their plates over to that state. If they do force it, then the fee is usually waived.

Only if you're trying to pass yourself off as a cool hip surfer dude. Other than that it's likely to increase your risk of being a target of crime.

Change your plates. CA doesn't give a crap about your pride, only your $200 (which may or may not buy you a plate at an upcoming Obama speaking engagement). You can buy a $5 bumper sticker that has "Native Californian" on it if you feel the need.

Which is why you should register them in the cheapest state that will allow a non-resident to register a vehicle. North Dakota I think does it

My neighbor up the street keeps Alaska plates on his two cars. Then he claims Permanent Fund payments for the whole family. He's not even renting - they own the house.

Dude total no brainer. Get your PCS plates. CA doesn't give a f about you. Save the money.

Also, lmao at people saying it's illegal or dangerous

I know someone here that still has Guam motorcycle plates :rofl

They cannot legally force it. Federal law

I was going to write "pride" as the only reason I could think of. But I see you have that covered in the OP. :laughing

FL...get rid of the CA plates. Like Russ said; you know you'll catch hell with some hillbilly.

There's no benefit to CA plates. Vehicle is already CA legal.

Man what a pain in the ass it is though. I had to contact my lienholder to mail the original title to the FL DMV at which point the FL DMV will mail me a letter stating that they have received the title so I can come in and submit my license, registration (previous) and FL insurance as well as do a vehicle inspection and some other crazy forms to waive the initial $225.

All this has to be done by 1/20/17 :/

Got the FL plates!

Question, does anyone know what I do with my old CA plates? I looked on the DMV website and it doesn't really say if I get to keep them or if I have to ship them back (or I just suck at searching).

You're supposed to surrender them, or somethung. They'll never be issued again anyway, keep.em, make.patch panels for your drift car, recycle, turn in to FL dmv... Lots of possibilities
