if they'd stop painting them all flat black and choose a more civilian friendly color, pink or white perhaps, it'd take a lot of wind out of the "it's scary militarization think of the criminals!!!" comments.

Just more lost revenue, considering those vehicles could have been sold to other countries.

Seriously though, as much as I'm all for giving our police departments the equipment they need. Military style armored vehicles are not one of them. Redwood City/San Mateo County has a couple of those mine resistant vehicles from Iraq. They get them for the cost of freight thanks to the U.S. scrapping what they can't sell to the police. So basically it's "Pay for shipping and it's yours!" -Uncle Sam

Have you seen these things? The doors are so heavy and armored a person can barely open them, they have hydraulic mechanisms to open and close them.

Is this shit necessary? Honestly.. is it?

No civilian has a tank.. except that billionaire.

So what is the need? Police have access to heavy weapons already via SWAT teams and most patrol units have AR style weapons and shotguns.

Hell, some police forces I've heard have MP5 style weapons in their trunks. Not sure if that's true but it wouldn't surprise me.

Let's not forget that we still have the federal government if something truly goes wrong. You think if a
"stage 5 defcon 3 - holy shit attack" happens our local police and swat will handle it? No, national guard and the fed roll in with the big guns.

Even in a major chemical attack it won't be local authorities, it will be the feds. Yes we will have first responders but their capabilities will never be able to handle what a seriously major threat will. They just don't have the funding or manpower.

So they use this stuff for busting joe-blow with his grow farm in his backyard. Usually by driving through his front door. It's really kinda wrong.

Plus, it takes time to roll out an armored vehicle with SWAT teams. So even if a Paris style attack happens. First responders in patrol cars already have the weapons capable of returning fire and taking out the threat.

/end rant.

Has there been a scenario in San Leandro that would warrant an armored ambulance?

I don't recall an incident in which paramedics had to withstand incoming hostile fire while saving lives and driving to safety....but I don't read the papers, what do I know.

It's the Billionaire (or Trillionaire) That is the worst kind.
Ever hear of the drug Cartel in Mexico? They have more money & Power, than the Government.
They tell the military what to do with their tanks.

Roll into town and open fire on the Police station...Every cop that was still alive, Quit.

The Cartel says.."We will pay you in Silver, or in lead...That is your only choice."

Personally I want our cops to look like they are equipped and trained, to do war with the bad guy.

And after the Watts riots, where responding firemen were shot at...I'd include any emergency personnel to have what they may need, at any time.

That's my thought, when has this been necessary? If ever? The only reason they want this is because they are basically getting the vehicle for free from Homeland Security, and they don't want to pass up on essentially free shit.

Yeah, because the U.S. it definitely like Mexico :thumbdown

Totally different dynamic and not even close to the same situation. Nobody is driving around opening fire on police stations and threatening them because the police would happily shoot back with their weapons. The police outgun nearly every citizen in this country. And when they don't they get grants and encouragement for more powerful weaponry. The LA bank shootout was a situation where they realized they needed better weapons. Out went the 9mm. Now they carry much more powerful weapons.

We also have a competent federal government in terms of response to threats like the on you described. We have federally trained anti-drug enforcement officers and anti-terrorism officers who are basically military. Mexico can't control most of it's country. We do. This isn't the wild wild west.

The local police driving around the suburbs does not need an armored personnel/anti-mine vehicle. The large cities have them already, why do the suburbs need them all the sudden?

say in the last 10-15 years...

UN blue? :laughing

I really can't think of a better color than pink tbh. If the bad guys don't laugh themselves into submission upon first sight, they'll surrender out of machismo because they don't want to get beaten by a pink rhinocerius

OOOOOOOH. EVEN BETTER!:
it already looks a little like a pig. Pink top. White underbelly. Turn the sows ear in to a silk PR purse

The movement, speed, and ever changing nature of a police chase kinda rules out armored vehicles of this nature.

"We will be arriving 20minutes late and it will already be over! Unless you guys can plan the ending, which would be great :thumbup "
