Inguinal Henia

I have an inguinal hernia. It doesn't really bother me yet but it should only get worse. I'm a General Contractor and have to lift heavy objects on occasion and one of my hobbies is bodybuilding which I'm actively persuing now. I went to Kaiser and the doctor said I will need surgery in order to fix the problem that will get worse. It's not bothering me much yet but I plan to talk to a surgeon after the holidays. Has anybody else gone through this? What can I expect with the surgery and the recovery. I hope to be working and lifting soon after surgery.

Light work for a month or two, gradual build-up back to normal.
I had the occasional flare-up from getting to jiggy too soon at work, but I listened to the pain and stopped doing things to make it hurt.

Mostly it's an incision in your abdomen so until it heals there will be discomfort.

I had one fixed. There's two method of repair:

1) They do a small incision and install a mesh patch. There's always a risk of your body having an issue with the patch. However if no issue its the quickest recovery time by far.
2) The surgeon makes a larger cut and sews up the different layers of muscle over the hernia. Benefit no foreign object inserted but longer recovery time.

Your surgeon will do whatever he is most comfortable with, you don't get to choose what method he will use.
I had the 2nd method done and been fine ever since. However the risk of recurrence is high enough to make sure you don't push it too early. If they have to go in and fix it a 2nd time you are screwed.

After talking with my doctor, I think a mesh patch will probably be used.

I assume you've already did some googling about the different methods and possible long term issues.
I didn't bother to read anything prior to my sugery. A few years afterwards I did get some pain when exercising and feared the worst. At that point I started reading up on the topic and of course most of what you find were the worst experiences and complications. Just glad I went in oblivious to all that. Had I looking into it beforehand I'd have been too paranoid.
For years after I'd do a couple of hundred leg raises 4-5 nights per week along with regular exercise assuming that would strengthen my lower abs. I mentioned this to a Dr and he said that wasn't likely to have much benefit with regard to preventing recurrence but I haven't had an issue since so maybe it helped, maybe it didn't.

You do get the choose the treatment method and if you aren't allowed to choose, find a different surgeon. While one method might have an advantage over another for your specific situation, the patient chooses, not the surgeon unless one procedure isn't possible.

Regardless of whether you have a sew up or mesh, some implement is going inside you unless the miracles of medicine have figured out a way the cut, open and sew without entering your body with fingers, tools etc. No such thing.

If your surgeon says they will only do it one way, time for a new surgeon. When there are different ways to treat the issue then patient chooses. Get a second opinion BEFORE surgery, always.

Mesh can be nearly painless. Its possible to have a mesh done and not need a single tablet of pain reliever afterwards and resume normal activity real fast sans heavy lifting or other exertions.

Before you go for surgery, get your place ready in case recovery take a bit. Arrange the common items you need so you can get them without bending down/over. When you get home you'll be tired so have the sofa ready, movies and so on but don't grow roots, movement around the house is good for you the next day. Above all, a repair doesn't preclude another one so consider that.

Watch too many TV ambulance chaser ads or the pile on horror stories, especially about mesh and you'll go nuts. There isn't close to a majority of mesh going bad.

Interview the surgeon, ask about their experience and specialty. Ask how many rejections they've seen. Take control of your care.

Just had surgery Monday for what turned out to be two small umbilical hernias. Doc said she would try to do it with no mesh depending on what she saw.
Ended up sticking a little mesh patch in.

Pretty bad pain. But not horrible. Narco constipation. Laughing and coughing sucks! But I feel like in two weeks I'll be good and ready to do whatever.

But it is different than a Inguinal, so not sure about that. My buddy had one in his groin area and had a tougher recovery.

Great it worked out. :thumbup Everyone is different, the same procedure can have different recoveries for different people.

Watch the hydrocodone if that is what they gave you, if you get stopped up enough you can end up back where you were. Ask your doc, they have stuff that really helps with that but so often just send you on your way with just a casual talk and some sheet of instructions.

Oatmeal, rasin bran and water for two days will do wonders.

Ya, I'll have to prepare beforehand.
