BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Diane Soto of Bakersfield couldn't believe what she was reading when she saw the message on a T-shirt sold at Spencer's in the Valley Plaza Mall.
"I don't like it at all, I think it's very degrading," said Soto.
She was not alone. That was the general reaction expressed by several others when they read what the T-shirt had to say. The message touches on the politically charged issue of immigration in a not so subtle way.
It reads, "Illegal immigrants are like sperm. Millions come in but only one little bastard actually works".
"To try and make money by attacking and disparaging other people is not right," said local immigration activist Jess Nieto.
Apparently this is not the first time Spencer's has found itself embroiled in controversy. Reports indicate the chain store had a line of offensive
"Asian-themed" T-shirts featuring stereotyped Asian caricatures and offensive text. The chain pulled the T-shirts in 2006 and extended an apology.
"They should learn from their little mistakes they do, obviously they don't learn," said Diane Soto.
The crude message regarding illegal immigrants however, was just too much to bear fore Kaylan McMillan of Oildale.
"It's not right! It's terrible!," she said. "My little girls' are Mexican and their dad is illegal."
When Eyewitness News tried to get a comment from Spencer's at Valley Plaza Mall, we were told no one could make a comment and referred us to their legal department.
An employee said the store at Valley Plaza had pulled the T-shirt from its shelves.
